I think the first release is what matters. Those are the rules I've been playing by. For example, some of the songs on Let it Be (like Across the Universe) were released in 1969, so I didn't consider those songs in the 70s tournament. But I'm fine either way since the album wasn't released until 1970. I wouldn't call anyone out on that kind of thing. Those are just the rules I'm playing by.numbers wrote:I was thinking about that myself, if my opinion means anything I think it should go by when the album was released.Rangi Guy wrote:What's the rule in these touraments with a song that appears on an album released at the end of one decade, but isn't released as a single till the next decade?

I'd thought about this too, as the Roky Erickson song I chose in the 70s tournament was released as a single in 1975 but not released on an album til the early 80s.
Anyway, I guess I'm in for this too.

Don't worry Doug, both the original release and the re-release of Into the Night by Benny Mardones were in the 80s.

OK, 'hypothetically' if the album came out Nov'79, but the song I want off of it wasn't released as a single until April'80... I can use the song? I can't use the song?? I'm confused.stip wrote: And what matters is the first release of the song
I think I'm on to you, Rangi, and I think I want the same song... but I don't think we'll get to use it.numbers wrote:I was thinking about that myself, if my opinion means anything I think it should go by when the album was released.Rangi Guy wrote:What's the rule in these touraments with a song that appears on an album released at the end of one decade, but isn't released as a single till the next decade?

Re: Best Decade Tournament - 80s: Sign ups now open
I think it should go by whenever the song first appeared, in any region, whether on album or single. If the single preceded the album, then the single release date. If the album came first, then the album release date. But either way, whenever it was made commercially available for purchase. So a song like Train in Vain, which was a single in February of 1980, would not be allowed since London Calling came out in December of 1979.
