I’ve been thinking about something that’s always kind of puzzled me. Normally, in most bands, a count-in serves as a tempo cue, and everyone comes in right on what would be the “five”, it’s smooth and immediate. But with the Ramones... and I feel like this is especially noticeable in the CJ years... they sometimes do this odd thing where there’s a slight pause after the “one two three four” before the song actually kicks in. Like:

ONETWOTHREEFOUR! … (pause) BAM!

It’s subtle, but once you notice it, it feels like they’re not coming in right after the count, but waiting just a tiny bit longer than you’d expect. You can hear it, for example, at the start of this live video
