Apparently Harvest Home is available to listen to on UK Spotify (and possibly UK iTunes) if anyone is interested. Can't access those here in the States unfortunately.

Not much on the new album, but nice new interview nonetheless.

I won't be able to listen until Ellie goes to bed (this is going to be a long hour) but man, these are just terrible, terrible song titles.

I'll probably be in the minority on this board, but Torn Red Heart is fucking amazing. Still warming up to Killing Season, but the rest is pretty solid. Pretty good mix of vintage Lanegan and some out of left field arrangements.

So this one is out?

Does it sound like blues funeral?

first impressions:

Harvest Home: This was okay. Didn't make a super strong first impression. It either needed a bit more bite or needed to be catchier. it was right in between and didn't seem to commit

Judgement Time: I feel like we've heard this song before, and a better version of it. The music wasn't anything special, and there wasn't enough weariness or prophecy in his voice to really make this interesting. An understated vocal performance needs something more compelling underneath it

Floor of the Ocean: This sounds more apiece with the No Bells on Sundays song. I don't really like the nasal tinge in his voice. I'm enjoying this more than the first time I heard it, which is encouraging. There's a pleasingly hypnotic droning quality to this song.

Killing Season: Odd song, surprisingly playful and light for what sounds like dark subject matter. Unexpected

Seventh Day: This is one of those songs that always reminds me of what people in the 70s thought the music of the future would sound like. Another one that's definitely gonna need some listens to sink in, since it's pretty far afield from what I'm primed to expect from him.

Not really. Electronica elements are WAY more out in front, and there's definitely a different feel to the songs. Lighter, more playful. The first half of the record, anyway.

I'm not ready to commit to fucking amazing, but with 3 more songs to go it's been my favorite.

I didn't either after my first listen. Quite honestly I wasn't initially that excited after first listen to the album, but after a few more it's really started to click.

I am the wolf: Soundtracking a western with this one. Like many of these songs the vocals are somewhat subdued and the music lacks the layers they've had on the last few records. Not a fan of this one on the first listen.

Torn Red Heart: Mark's Just Breathe. I'm a fan of Just Breathe though, so that's fine. This feels like a logical extension of a lot of the stuff on Imitations, but better. This may be my favorite song I've heard so far on this record. The most committed vocals for sure, even if they're coming from a different place then we're used to

Waltzing in Blue: Okay, this one sounds like one of the blues funeral dirges without the guitar. Not sure what I think. Could break either way.

The Wild People: I bet Jonas Pap was recorded the same week as this one. It's a bit better. Would have fit in well on I'll Take Care of You. One of the standouts on the first listen.

Death Trip to Tulsa: More Blues Funerals influence. The only song on this disc that really had any bite to it, but suffers from the same underbaked flatness as the rest of the album

First impression: This was a bit disappointing, to be honest. No true standout track, and musically wasn't that interesting. I was nervous when I read he wrote these songs on his phone, and then recorded in a series of lazy sessions. That's exactly what this sounds like. The songs seem underdeveloped, and there's no real momentum behind them either. And unfortunately the vocal performances are, if not mailed in, not exactly exciting. They sound a bit like scratch tracks that he recorded to get a feel for the song, but then never got around to going back and really blowing up.

Now granted, this was a first listen, and maybe there are some subtleties I need to warm up to. And a lot of these songs are definitely new ground for him, so i may need to get used to them so that i can appreciate them for what they are, rather than what I was expecting them to be. So we'll see. But this is certainly a huge step back from Blues Funeral. I think the EP was better, too. Sad Lover beats the shit out of everything on this CD, and I think Dry Iced and No Bells on Sunday were better than most of the rest.

Gonna give this one more listen tonight, with headphones. This was on my computer speakers, and they're really speakers, but it's not the same as an immersive listening experience.

I hope that's the case. But since Blues Funeral he's really been on a downward spiral for me. Imitations, Black Pudding, and the Anthology were all let downs, despite some great stuff on each of them. And even No Bells I've only sporadically revisited, outside of Sad Lover.

This is where being prolific really helps. Being disappointed in a ML offering is not the end of the world since there will be 3 more things next year.

True in that there will likely be more music from him next year to digest. To me this is his best since Blues Funeral, but I haven't listened enough yet to rank it among his other albums. I did appreciate it more with headphones.

Imitations was hit and miss, same with Black Pudding. I'm def enjoying this more than the EP, although Sad Lover is fantastic. Never really warmed up to Dry Iced at all. Like Blues Funeral though, I expect many of these songs to translate well live.
