I think we should let Red Sox fans in so that they can fight over who gets to draft which version of Mike Greenwell. They'll be their own demise.
Kaius wrote:This seems really cool, but there's no way my personal knowledge would suffice for a draft like this. Is there a rankings list/cheat sheet to go off of, or do you have to search for specific players/positions?
You could just pick dudes you like, and then go baseball-reference.com and decide which season of theirs you want.
Actually, another question. Should you have to declare which season of theirs you want when you draft them, or should you just have to draft the player, and then when we set the final rosters/match-ups, you declare which season of theirs you want?

I feel like if you do it that way, each player could only be picked once. Otherwise, guys might have the same year in mind when they both select, say, Randy Johnson.

I do like the idea that each player can only be picked once but I'm not in love with the idea.

Well yeah, we'll only let each guy be picked once. But say you picked Randy Johnson, you wouldn't have to decide which year of his you wanted until the match-ups started. You'd be in essence reserving the right to decide on any one of his seasons.

I think anything that forces people to dig a little bit deeper makes it a bit more interesting. If every single team has some version of Bonds, Maddux, Clemens, & Griffey on its roster, it's not gonna be as fun.

Agreed.
(for the record, I think the same rule would have been great for the song tournaments)
I just wasn't sure if that had been decided since you had brought it up earlier.

So I think the only rule we need to decide on is a time period.
What if we did 1980-2013?

I'm fine with that. Personally, I'd vote for 1990 because I think the 80s might be the baseball decade I know least of pretty much all for some reason, but whatever the group wants.

I'm ok with that. My best knowledge is from about 1990-present, but I'm pretty much addicted to baseball history so I'm open to any time period. We could always do 1980-2013 and then do a broader time period if there's enough interest to do it again.

1988 was my first season following baseball, so if it turns out everyone who wants in started around the late 80s/early 90s, we'll go with that. If we get a few older fans we can drag the starting point up earlier.

I'm actually the same way. I've always thought it was weird that I know so little about the decade in which I was born and so much more about the 1920s.

After this one we'll do a dead ball era tournament.

Yep, same. When I was a kid (like elementary age) I used to read so many baseball history books. Seeing as that was early 90s, maybe I was reading books that simply didn't have the 80s yet.
FWIW, I'd say my baseball fandom begins in 1993 with the Marlins.

My first memories are of the 1992 Blue Jays, and even then they're pretty vague and I don't really know if I actually remember them. I remember 1993 very clearly.
Fun story that I'm sure no one cares about but I'm going to write out anyway: I'm pretty sure when I was a kid my favourite number was always whatever age I was, so when I 7 it was 7, when I was 8 it was 8, etc. So when I turned 9 in 1993, 9 became my favourite number. I always say I'm number 9 in sports because John Olerud was my favourite player growing up, but I'm pretty sure he was my favourite player because he was number 9 when I was 9 years old. The moral of the story: kids are weird.

I'm 33 and will be 34 in October. I grew up in a family that ddin't really dig baseball too much. More so football in Nebraska which I like but nothing like baseball. My Mom will watch playoffs but that was about it. I found it on tv when I was young (I wanna say like summer 1987?) and was hooked so my first vivid memories started in 1988 when I was like 7 so I can go either way in this tournament. I remember the 1988 World Series very well and bits and parts of the 87 Series. I played baseball (like most kids) and loved Bo Jackson (one of my favorite athletes ever), Nolan Ryan, Tony Gwynn, Will Clark, Kirby Puckett (shame he never won an MVP and one of the most underrated players of all time), Andre Dawson, Cal Ripken JR, Tim Raines (Get this dude in the Hall of fame please!!), Wade Boggs, Orel Hershiser, George Brett, Ozzie Smith, Rickey Henderson, Eric Davis, Dave Winfield, Don Mattingly, Paul Molitor, Robin Yount, Alan Trammell, David Cone, Doc Gooden, etc. The relationship I have with baseball and music is an intense one. After my child they are my biggest loves and I can't imagine my life without them. Corny I know.
I didn't have a team until 1990 when I became a Texas Rangers fan. My sister moved to Dallas in 1989. Summer of 1990 I started going there in the summers and watched games on tv. Fell in love with Ruben Sierra, Ryan, Raffy, Kevin Brown, Harold Baines, Julio Franco, Gary Pettis, Steve Buechele, Kenny Rogers, a young Jamie Moyer lol, etc etc. I have a ball signed by the full 1996 Rangers team. I was 15 and will always remember that summer. Good times.
I'm down with 1980-present or 1990-present. I'm Switzerland on that. Totally neutral.

I would be making all picks based off of my collection of baseball trading cards from the 90's.

I'll play if there's room for me. I have a working knowledge of baseball like '96 to present, but any time period would be fine to me.
