She became a bit of a caricature, perhaps. But that doesn't negate all the brilliance that came before. We keep seeing the word "trailblazer" used in memorium. And I think that's the most appropriate word.

I don't know anything about her, honestly. I just think of E! and tabloids and Botox and plastic and it just snowballs from there.

You should watch some of her early standup. Truly was groundbreaking and funny as shit

Yep.
There are so many comedians who owe their career to her. Also, it's no coincidence that Louis CK uses her to juxtapose Dane Cook in an episode of LOUIS.

Her talk show in the late 80s was really funny. I remember my mom looking at me weird for watching it all the time.

Then I suppose, if she had died at that time, it probably would have been a loss.

I don't think the death of the 21st century Joan Rivers is a loss of any kind to the public sphere. I'm sure it's hard for her family, though.

Kinda team McParadigm on this one. Late in her life she seems to have developed into a really mean, hateful and vindictive person. But I saw some of her early standup footage and can see that it was funny and significant.

Now there's a loss.

So I shouldn't make an RIP thread for anyone famous that dies of old age?

I admit to having lost track of her career somewhere in the mid-90s. She made some choices that were not indicative of her talent. But mean, hateful and vindictive? Where does that come from? I'm not saying it's inaccurate, I'm just curious. Like I said, I really haven't paid attention since she started looking like a oversized toy version of that robot she played in SpaceBalls.
Her episode of Louie was pretty fantastic, though.

If you've barely even paid any attention to her in the last twenty years, how big a loss can this be?

It's not a big loss for me at all. I think it's a bummer, especially for her family, as you say. I saw the news and thought, "oh she died? That's a bummer."
She was one of the pioneers, one of the people that made comedy what it is today. She was raw and insightful and full of passion and vigor. It's not a national tragedy or anything. But her career had a profound impact on a lot of artists. I think it's more than appropriate to mourn that loss.

If you had watched a certain movie by now I wouldn't have to be talking about a dead has been comedian. That Transformers thread would be 200 pages by now.
