I have a lot of trouble with the majority of Make Believe but I put "Haunt You Everyday" as a top 10 weezer song. I enjoy "Hold Me" a lot and "Perfect Situation" is an excellent single
There's something about "This Is Such A Pity" that I always really liked.

I thought critics loved Pinkerton? Or is it just in retrospect?...

Nah, Pinkerton was widely panned when it came out. It's really turned around since.

They compared Pinkerton to Bush's Razorblade Suitcase at the time.

Also, how has no one compiled a ranking of Weezer albums yet? RM is slacking

I like Blue, Pinkerton and most of Green. The rest is pretty dire.

I actually liked Hurley a little bit. More than the other recent efforts. Anyone heard this yet?

For me to rank any of the albums after maladroit it would be me just timing how long the album lasted from start to end, aka how long I could stomach each track before I hit track forward
I can't even compare the new one to anything bec the previous ones sucked that bad.. This one did have a couple songs that weren't completely terrible tho.. I wanna say da vinci
Actually.. now i think about it.. Perfect situation and pork n beans are good tunes tho.. I'd put em up with the good album stuff

me too. Beverly Hills is easily the worst song on that album. Take that song out and its a pretty decent album. This Is Such a Pity, Damage in Your Heart, Perfect Situation, Peace are all good songs.

"This is Such a Pity" and "Perfect Situation" are pure garbage.
Especially "Perfect Situation", getting you all pumped up with that awesome fucking intro, followed by a flaccid misfire of a song.
My ranking probably looks something like...
Pinkerton
Blue
Maladroit
Green
Hurley
Red
Make Believe
Raditude
I listened to some of the new album this afternoon. Sounds pretty good.

theplatypus wrote:Even Green has some good ideas and solid melodies (I really love "Smile" and "Simple Pages") but yeah, it's completely safe and formulaic, a direct reaction to Pinkerton's crushing critical and commercial failure. Maladroit is a very fun album with some really good tunes. After that, though? Mostly dreck. A few salvageable singles ("Pork and Beans" and "If You're Wondering..." are catchy pop songs with some zest to them) but mostly a lot of really confusing artistic decisions. This new single "Back to the Shack" made me kinda sad to listen to, because it feels like such a statement of utter defeat. "Hey, we tried some crap, but here's more rock music for you. We like rock music, right? Doesn't this kinda sound like the Blue album? It totally sounds like the Blue album. Fight to get it back again, yeah yeah yeah yeah."
I listened to Pinkerton again the other day. Floored. Still one of my favorite albums.
The funny thing about this is how little fundamental musical change there is between Blue and Pinkerton, and then again between Pinkerton and Green. In hindsight it seems utterly bizarre to me that Pinkerton could have been a failure in a world where Blue was a hit -- I realize that Blue skews kind of goofy where Pinkerton skews personal, but both records have elements of the other in very tangible amounts. Looking back it seems like the turnaround on Pinkerton was pretty quick -- it was certainly well-established by the time Green came out.
Pinkerton and Blue are really the only Weezer discs that mean anything to me, and these days I am a lot more likely to reach for Blue over Pinkerton. I have heard odd songs from more recent releases and can't think of one that wasn't more or less repulsive.

I haven't listened to a Weezer album since Red, which I thought actually had a few pretty good songs (certainly more than Make Believe), but I always dug Maladroit a lot too. I should give it another spin soon.

I don't really care about Weezer albums but my five favourite Weezer songs would be:
Buddy Holly
Hash Pipe
Island In The Sun
Undone
Say It Ain't So
So yeah, I guess I just like their singles. Sorry for not really adding anything to the discussion.

I love the Steve Albini plagiarism in Pinkerton's production. It's so deep and noisy. Beautiful. "Tired of Sex" is just the best song.
