I listen to music all day at work, while skiing, while at the gym, while in bed....
pathetic maybe but there it is.
I do this too. The girl I'm seeing doesn't like it.

Could you eloborate on this? I use spotify a whole lot but I still find out about music through other channels and then just stream it through spotify rather than download. How do you go about discovering new stuff through spotify
There are usually lists of 'similar artists' in the top right corner. Also, playlists people create are a pretty good window to some new artists.

Being married seems really awful. I am continually amazed at the seemingly harmless things my married friends are forced to give up in the name of their families.

Stip- as much as I appreciate your guided tours and your complete disregard for any lack of agency - I bet you would have time to find and consume new music if you gave all the other stuff up

I love music. I have it on constantly. It's always in the background, it's always playing. But I really love investing myself in an album. That's why I only get in about 10-15 a year. I can't fully digest more than that. And if even one of those 10-15 is half as good as Generals, forget about it! That will be the only thing I listen to for months.

When was the last tour I even did? I was kicking around doing a No Code one for a few months and just can't seem to find the motivation to do it. Some of it to, I hate to say, is that free time has become so rare that it's often just easier to listen to things that are familiar. that's why I mostly just listen to new releases of artists I'm already invested in. it's not that I don't want to hear new stuff as much as I just have a hard time finding the motivation to seek it out. I tend to listen when it is presented to me.

As stupid as it sounds, I also have a hard time listening to music in YouTube video format. I don't know what that is. But I hate it. So even when people try to introduce new things, I don't always check them out right away. Usually because they're sharing the song/artist with me via YouTube clip.

I know. I was trying to make myself feel better as it is nowhere on the horizon :\
Hence my new vinyl obsession

I buy about 50 albums a year, maybe 60% of which are new releases.

Vinyl is a good substitute for marriage.

I downloaded 15 records from 2012 this year and got in to about 5 of them heavily.
I'm such a listener of old music though...the 5 is actually somewhat of an effort to get into music from the past 12 months. I got into many albums I'd never heard before from years prior to 2012...even if it's only 3-5 years old I'd still be much more likely to give it some spins. Feels like there's more context or something there; there's so much music it's easy to get lost.

This has been a big struggle for me as well over the last few years. Maybe striding into mid-30s for me has meant that I've just grown more comfortable with what I like, and I'm okay with it, but I don't feel the need to seek out new artists regularly unless I am struck by the mood. I probably bought 15-20 new albums last year, but maybe 2 were from artists I'd never heard before and took a flyer on because people's descriptions and feelings on the artists matched what I thought would be something I would like (i.e., Alabama Shakes, Gary Clark Jr.). I think part of it is less time to spend on music, but a bigger part is my growing appreciation for the music already sitting on my shelves. I still love that stuff and constantly go back to it. I am also one for artist and album kicks, which leaves even less time for new music. What I've learned to accept about myself is that it's okay. I had always felt that I was supposed to listen to everything and wide arrays of things - for that would be how I know what I was hearing was in fact good. Turns out that the fact I want to hear something over and over is reason enough.

But you're sitting on the couch with your hand on your junk, doing everything you can to avoid banging your wife?

its kinda like radio was back in the day. the quality is bad, but it sounds better because i know other people are listening to it too.
