Christina Hendricks and Bryan Cranston were also good in it.

The soundtrack was good. And that dude getting his face smashed in in the elevator was good. And that jacket was good.

TWBB and Drive are extremely stylish and compelling movies for reasons that have nothing to do with their central performances.

I thought the ending was a cop out. He should have died.

The whole movie is one giant exercise in style over substance. And since I don't care for the style, the movie leaves little to be desired. Again, the soundtrack and Gosling were excellent. But if felt like Ryan was awesome in spite of the rest. He managed something brilliant amid all the unnecessary dressing and self-indulgence.

A lot of people say that about Refn, but I don't think it's true. There's a through-line of substance in all of his films; each one is sort a spiritual sequel to the last. Though I think Drive may be, relatively, his least substantial.

Sure, I can see that. But I don't think "substance" automatically negates self-indulgence or the like. I'm not saying he doesn't have things to say. I just think he chooses to say them loudly and a one-sided self-gratifying fashion. Which in and of itself may not be a bad thing, but it's not my thing.

Fair enough. But you probably know I love indulgent directors. That's kinda my thing.

To be totally fair, I harbor no ill will for people who are fans of his work. It isn't my thing, but I actually do understand his appeal for others. I find myself revisiting his work more often than other directors that I don't care for precisely because I think he does have something to offer, even if it's not something I'm usually into. I'm excited for his fans and I'll probably end up seeing The Neon Demon because I keep thinking he'll eventually make something that really clicks with me.
