Surprised there has been no mention of Nirvana. Especially if Unplugged counts.
Hendrix deserves a mention with Axis, Electric Ladyland and Band of Gypsys.
As far as current bands the National last three albums have been incredible. High Violet was in my car for months.

Let if Be and Abbey Road are certainly good enough to overcome Yellow Submarine. Still, YS holds them back here.
Nirvana is actually a GREAT candidate. I might put them right under Tom Waits and St. Vincent.

Last 3 meaning recently recorded or final 3 albums of a bands career

I'm taking it to mean the latest three albums they've released. Whether their career is over or not.

Sleater-Kinney is a good choice -- haven't heard the forthcoming one yet, but they closed their last run with what many agree were their three best -- and things weren't too shabby leading up to 'em either. Bodes well for their comeback...

I think the question makes more sense if we're excluding bands that have more than three records and is still making music. In my mind the question is about continuing career arcs.

I have not fully absorbed QOTSA. I like what I have heard but I have not jumped into their material. I probably should. I turned down free tickets to see them a couple years ago. Kinda regret that.

The National's last three are basically perfection. They are by far (in my opinion) the best band making music today.
