Alex, you should elaborate. Thanks.

LV, you should try to be less of a flakey, aloof Jorge-jr. Thanks.

making a movie about a black jazz musician, in and of itself, would not be racist. i'm not sure why you think it would be.

I have heard nothing but good things about this movie. Been trying to see it, but it's in that late run cycle of only playing very early or very late.

Yeah, let's just pretend that jazz isn't a black artform and that making a white kid the protagonist (and another white guy his teacher) in a movie based in the world of jazz doesn't reek of movie whitewashing.
I haven't see the movie, though I want to. But I wonder if these could be things that the film explores, even if only in the periphery. If so, would it still bother you, verm?

No, if the movie is a conscious examination of that kind of appropriation and, perhaps, some of the anxiety that comes with it, that may be interesting. I doubt very highly it will be that, though. We'll see.

Are you serious? That's not my point at all. The protagonist is psychologically tortured by Simmons' character throughout. If he was black the masses would have missed the point and gotten their LV/Jorge minority defense mechanism on, and the film would have failed at the Box Office.

White people have been playing jazz excellently for a long, long time though. It's a syncretic form of music by nature. In any era of jazz there are lots of excellent white musicians creating the music alongside their black counterparts. It doesn't have the same sort of stark appropriation as something like Hip-Hop, at least from what I've learned historically and musically.

Please elaborate on what you feel the "point" is that audiences would have missed if the character were black.

Sure, but I think when Whiplash is considered within the context of its racist industry (movies), its white focus feels particularly icky.

I kinda doubt it too.

You've gone full-blown retard. I can't say I'm not entertained.

I don't know. My second favorite jazz drummer is white.

I'm getting this movie recommended left and right, presented as something that "seems tailor-made for me" (I'm guessing because of my interest in jazz music), but I haven't gotten around to seeing it.

The obsession with ambition and legacy, morally ambiguous methods of extracting worth from others, the sense of achieving vicariously and whether the ends justify the means.

You should totally see the film.

I'll see it eventually. I see everything eventually.

Still don't know what that has to do with making the character white, but okay.
