This basically looks like the "Live in London" album, just with the "Old Ideas"'songs added. His third live album in five years.
"Popular Problems" is pretty good -- it and "Old Ideas" give each other some context, and there is some characteristically strong writing throughout even if none of it feels remotely fresh or surprising. After ten plus years listening to this guy I find his perpetual need for an aesthetic coach increasingly less endearing -- namely, the fact that he continually insists on giving such an undue fraction of most of his songs over to serviceable but characterless female vocalists who undercut the gravitas of his own voice every time out, especially since here more than ever they constantly seem to be tripping over each other rhythmically. Of course, I remember the Casios, so I am reluctant to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I'm with you KD - I'm surprised he hasn't used the 'sublime Webb Sisters' for either album, as they do a great job in concert.
I'm more than happy to have yet another live video/album - I liked the way he minimised the overlap from Live in London and Songs from the Road, and this new one looks like a mix of both with the new songs thrown in which should be good.
Hopefully the cinematography of this will be better than Live in London, which was basically just the feed on the screens at the show hastily thrown onto DVD (i.e. mostly close-ups, no wide/crowd shots to give you a sense of the show). Though I'm not encouraged by the haphazard approach to artwork etc these days!

I finally got around to Popular Problems. It's a very solid album for an 80 year old man, and the first two songs are bad ass. They're like the best moments on Old Ideas without the specter of death hanging over them (though that's what made the best stuff on that album some of his best stuff ever)

To answer KD's year old point about the backing vocals, at this point I assume he uses background singers so he can sleep with them during the recording process.
