I haven't heard this song, I probably won't seek it out, but if I had to make a guess for how Ed's daughter's career is going to play out:

Harper Vedder : music :: Jaden Smith : movies

I read that Eddie wrote the song.

Has anyone seen the movie? Is a 7 year old girl signing a song in the credits appropriate to the story?

Great cast, though. I'll still see it.

I won't, it looks awful. Also Hollywood whitewashing of Hawaiian culture etc etc etc

Well, I haven't seen the movie, so I can't speak to any whitewashing or whatever. But I love the cast and I like Cameron Crowe enough to want to see it. Plus, if there's an Eddie Vedder penned song at the end? Sure. I'll probably wait until Netflix or whatever, but I'll definitely see it.

The fact that there's a movie about Hawaii called Aloha with a 100% white lead cast where Emma Stone plays a Hawaiian named Alison Ng should be sufficient, no? Like, I don't need to see the movie to know what's happening

Anyway, Cameron Crowe is coming off of a string of shitty movies. That zoo film? Yikes

Cameron Crowe is the Brendan O'Brien of movies.

Emma's character is like 1/12 Hawaiian or something like that. It's that way in the book the movie is based on. The character is supposed to be blond-haired and blue-eyed. So, I don't really see what the problem is.

But whatevs.

Yeah, I didn't see that Zoo movie. Or Elizabethtown. But I've liked all his others.

I thought it was ridiculous that Crowe bowed to public pressure (the PC Police) and apologized about the casting.

She's like half Chinese, right? I don't think Aloha is based on a book, Cameron Crowe is the only credited writer. Look, without having watched the film, I can't say much more than this seems overly familiar and groan-inducingly symptomatic of a larger issue concerning Hollywood erasure of people of color ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm sure there will be some Native Hawaiians in this thing, probably playing hotel concierges or something.

You're totally right. I'd read something about this (very quickly) and misunderstood what the author was saying. She's 1/4 Hawaiian and 1/4 Chinese. And not based on a book. The stuff I was referring to earlier comes from the dialogue in the film.

According to Crowe: "As far back as 2007, Captain Allison Ng was written to be a super-proud ¼ Hawaiian who was frustrated that, by all outward appearances, she looked nothing like one. A half-Chinese father was meant to show the surprising mix of cultures often prevalent in Hawaii. Extremely proud of her unlikely heritage, she feels personally compelled to over-explain every chance she gets. The character was based on a real-life, red-headed local who did just that."

I thought some of that was coming from a book synopsis, but I was confused. Apologies.

Anyway, I take your larger point and I agree. I just think the issue regarding Emma's character specifically is a little extreme. But, again, haven't seen it. Could be wrong.

If Hollywood is guilty of anything, it's discrimination against older, female actresses and the constant need to attach a young lady to an older man.

Guys, guys...let's not lose sight of the big question: is there a Boom cameo in this film?

It could just be an instrumental with her being the one who plays the ukulele. I think I've only seen it say performer not singer so who knows.

I won't have anyone speaking ill of Hollywood on this board.
