I'd like to see someone argue that Grave of the Fireflies is not the saddest movie recommended in this thread. I'd also say it's amongst the most dream-like.

I'm a little surprised LV didn't recommend Only God Forgives.

I guess the OP lead me to believe he was looking for a specific strain of sadness, a melancholy, lonely sort of semi-nostalgia. A feeling of transience. Looking into the past. Those were the kinds of films I was suggesting.

Wow guys, so many suggestions :)

I've downloaded Children of Men, Broken Flowers, Grave of the Fireflies, Mulholland Drive and Upstream Color just to start off with.

Ruddock, we're definitely Hannibal bros :) I'll be shedding a tear when its all over. Fuck NBC.

LoathedVermin72 hit the nail on the head! That's EXACTLY the type of feeling I was looking for.

I love love love Lost in Translation. The vibe in that one is wonderfully melancholy.

Looks interesting enough. It did well at Sundance in 2013. Is it worth the watch?

I'm not a fan of Spectacular Now. Brutally formulaic and bland. Kyle Chandler's really good in it, though.

Honestly, the first thing that came to mind after reading the OP is Tarkovsky's The Mirror.

For a recent film, try Before I Disappear. It's on Netflix. A lot of people shit on it but there are some beautiful sequences and it has the hazy, meandering melancholia after-hours feel down.
