i thought this was one of the few kubrick's i haven't seen, but i didn't realize he did so much before paths of glory

I've seen all but Fear and Desire and a few of the early shorts. Can't say I'm really that interested in seeking those out, though.

the shining is kind of in the middle for me i guess...paths of glory was okay, but mostly forgettable...i just thought about Spartacus too, i'm not sure i ever saw the whole thing and it was a really long time ago, so i can't comment on it

The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, Paths of Glory, and Eyes Wide Shut all rank among my all-time favorites. I'd agree that ACO and FCM are lesser than his best works, but I still think they're very good films. I at least like almost everything he ever made, I think.

Spartacus is easily my favorite.

I love old epics. I watched it a bunch of times as a kid before I knew who Kubrick was so I wasn't viewing it as a film buff assignment. To be honest until he died I didn't realize he was a big deal even though I had unknowingly seen a bunch of his movies.

The Wind and the Lion left a pretty big impression when I saw it a few years ago. I really need to rewatch that. John Milius is the best.

ah i forgot about Full Metal Jacket which i also consider to be great. not a fan of Clockwork or 2001. The Shining was ok.

I hated 2001 so much. I wanted to stop watching, but kept going till the end in hopes that it'd get better

A Clockwork Orange has had a very strange trajectory in my mind. I was 15 or 16 the first time I saw it, and that was a little too young. I hated it and didn't want to see it again. But somehow, without even seeing it again, I liked it more and more. When I finally did see it again when I was 18 or 19, I loved it. I've watched it every couple of years since, and have consistently thought of it as one of my favorite movies.
The first half of the movie is easily one of the strangest bits of cinema ever. It has a liveliness, and a playfulness, and a mystery that is just unmatched. And it is distressing as hell for long stretches. It's still a very difficult movie.

I was even younger the first time I saw 2001 and got nothing out of it. I re-visit it every couple years and get more out of it every time. I really love it now.

The Shining has had the opposite trajectory. I loved it the first time I saw it when I was 18 or 19. I've seen it two or three times since and liked it less each time. I still think that it's great, though.
