That's a terrible saying. You should change that.

Off He Goes is a truly gorgeous song sonically, and it's a vibe they can rarely capture live. It's one of the few songs on No Code that I think truly underlines Neil Young's influence on the record (an influence that I think, in terms of the songwriting, was somewhat overstated). I like Help Help, but I'm going with No Code this time.

Well said, though I may say Smile underlines Neil's influence more. Normally I would vote of Off He Goes, it's a beautiful song, but I've kinda been in a RA mood, and a lot of songs from that album have benefited as a result in this here tournament.

I can't listen to the bridge of Help Help without feeling a serge of raw energy and emotion. Just kicks my entire ass every time. It's one of my favorite things about Pearl Jam.

I agree those are the two songs most obviously influenced by Neil Young. But Around the Bend sounds like something that could have been on Harvest Moon; and Hail, Hail and Red Mosquito share some elements with Ragged Glory and Rust Never Sleeps.

Yeah, No Code still has elements of Mirror Ball, and is definitely the most NY sounding PJ album.

Explains why Stip hates it so much.

oh it totally does. That's an influence I'm thankful they haven't gone back to.

I forget, what's your favorite track on No Code? You like a few of them, yeah?

I like all of them but Off He Goes and I'm Open. I like every pearl jam album. Hail Hail, Red Mosquito, Who You Are, and In My Tree are my favorites, but none of them are top tier.

OBVIOUSLY, I disagree. But good to know. For some reason I thought you disliked a lot of NC. Glad to know I'm wrong.

that's how i feel about a lot of the traditional favorites - ledbetter, hti, dissident, release, nothingman - those songs never did much for me.

and i know you think it's overrated but that is just here @RM talk, yeah? i mean the masses wouldn't know a lot of the NC tunes.

just on RM. my outlier opinions on RM are, i would think, mostly mainstream outside it

I would agree until proven otherwise.

But all of that aside, I genuinely love No Code. I think even when it dropped I appreciated it more than my other friends who were Pearl Jam fans at the time. So many just tossed it aside, dismissed it. But I genuinely loved the first half of that record from first listen. The second half of the record took some time to grow on me. But Sometimes to Off He Goes is and always was sublime.
