The December opening is a good point, but I think one thing to take into account is: this date has been on the calendar for years, and other studios have steered clear of it like the plague. I don't think many people are going to see Collateral Beauty this weekend.

Good point. But here's something interesting... La La Land opened in limited release this past weekend. It showed on only 5 screens and was the 15th highest grossing film of the weekend. It averaged $176,221 per screen.
And it gets a wider release on Thursday. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.
