what bands do?
Beatles, Zeppelin, Coltrane -- some others I'm sure if I thought about it harder. I never said that it was a theoretical, impossible score, just that I didn't think Pearl Jam deserved it -- they are not a band whose career I look at and think, "Man, here is a band whose body of work is as flawless as I have the right to expect from error-prone human beings." Something close to that, perhaps, especially when I factor in my own sentimental biases in favor of the band, but their last decade has been pretty creatively bereft. That isn't insignificant.

If the sentimental bias is all that matters, what the hell, give 'em a ten.

Pearl Jam are better than Led Zeppelin. There I said it.

To your larger point, though... I couldn't even comfortably say that the Beatles (a band that I personally think is the greatest band of all time) have a body of work that is "as flawless as I have the right to expect from error-prone human beings." Their early flaws are so glaring in light of their latter-day genius. And even then there's still putting Her Majesty after The End. Inexcusable.

But, I do see what you mean. And I'm mostly just giving you a hard time. MOSTLY.

Early Beatles are fantastic. You people are crazy.

A lot of it, yeah. But there's a lot of it that really withers when compared to what they accomplished later, I think. That doesn't mean I still won't entertain the argument that Shake It Up Baby is the greatest vocal in Rock and Roll history.

I never cared much about Led Zeppelin, I like most of their contemporaries a lot better.

I'm with Joey. They're my absolute favorite band. Period. To deny that would be to deny myself.

Even at the height of my fandom, I've never considered Pearl Jam to be my "favourite band" (though I have difficulty with that concept generally).

They used to be really good, now they're something else. They had a good run.

No doubt about it.

Ten through Riot Act, that seven album run rivals any other seven album run I'm encountered. Just unreal good stuff.

Absolutely.

They were consistently great for a very long time.

They would be a 10 if they quit after Binaural. Now they're around a 7.

the negative war in the second half of the career really hurts them, despite having a strong peak

Just can't beat the run from Ten to Riot Act. S/T has some great moments too and up through that tour were still one of/if not the best live band around.

So, for 16 years, they were nearly untouchable for me. That is what gets me through these geriatric years.
