I'm having this issue. That being said, I think I'll throw in for Rival here.theplatypus wrote:I don't know. I like "Light Years" and "Rival" a lot for very different reasons.
I think I'll give it to "Light Years" for the terrible fade-out in "Rival"
The song is a bit similar to what I said about Sleight of Hand in another thread; this song is a really different feel for them. This is one of the few songs you can clearly tell came from a different lyrical voice than the one usually steering the ship for PJ; I can't imagine Eddie's take on Columbine would be in the same universe as Stone's is here. And hearing how Eddie attacks it is part of the fun of it.
I still think the last line of the song in Rival, with the discordant piano and the borderline disturbing backing vocal, is one of the best moments in PJ's whole catalog.

Oh man, I was sure I was going to be the only vote for Rival.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Re: Soon Forget vs. Light Years vs. Rival
Soon Forget is a fun experiment but it falls flat lyrically (ultimately, though there are a few moments that people beat up on for no reason) and introduced us to a bizarre ukesplosion that, while fine, got way out of control. Though, it had a happy ending with that EV solo record, which I love, and gave us Sleeping By Myself.
Soon Forget is pretty great, guys.
Light Years is awesome. But here's the thing: it's up against Rival. So....

Rival is a contender for best Binaural song. Rival, Sleight of Hand, and Insignificance are probably my top 3. What a damn fine album Binaural is.

I think I'd put NAIS in my top three with Sleight of Hand and Insignificance. But Rival would be a close fourth.

Sometimes I wonder if Binaural will ever replace No Code as my favorite PJ album. It and it's outtakes are all so good.durdencommatyler wrote:So good!darth_vedder wrote:Rival is a contender for best Binaural song. Rival, Sleight of Hand, and Insignificance are probably my top 3. Re: Soon Forget vs. Light Years vs. Rival
Binaural took a long time to climb out of last place for me. But that was never because I thought it was a bad record. It's an amazing record that took me far too long to fully appreciate. Still, I can't imagine that it'll ever be #1 in my book. As brilliant as it is, I can't imagine ever ranking it above 4. Probably never above 5, really.darth_vedder wrote:Sometimes I wonder if Binaural will ever replace No Code as my favorite PJ album. Have you listened to the Deluxe version available on this site? It's sort of a game changer.darth_vedder wrote:Sometimes I wonder if Binaural will ever replace No Code as my favorite PJ album.
