This may be an instance of my favorite PJ song facing off against my second favorite (which does tend to change periodically). I think Last Exit is fantastic, one of my favorite album openers by any band. Everything Vitalogy is trying to capture, that first song has it. It's accessible yet grating, it wants to keep you slightly askew and uncomfortable.

But Insignificance is the best song this band ever wrote. It's a song that combines that aggression of something like Evolution, the emotional devastation of songs like Black and Parting Ways, and an intellectual component Eddie rarely reaches for. So many of the band's songs are great at focusing on one aspect of their personality; their aggression, intensity, their knack of atmospherics....Insignificance wants to do it all. They never wrote a more ambitious song, and it succeeds on all counts.

As it tumbles back into that final chorus, it sounds like everything is on the line, and that's because the song has raised the stakes that high. I can't say enough about the song, it's been my favorite PJ song as long as I can remember, and I'm still hearing new things in it.

Last Exit

I really don't get the hype for Insignificance from the actual hardcore Pearl Jam fanbase, it just seems like another boring Binaural song to me.

Not to mention that really cool breakdown with some sleigh bells. I love it when PJ uses sleigh bells! I'm pretty sure SOH and Happy When I'm Crying uses them too.

i like insignificance a lot - and I agree it is aiming for what digster describes. i just dont think it fully realizes its ambitions

Last Exit really is top notch. Both of these songs are top 10 for me. Oh, speaking of top my 10, thanks for voting IMT. I know it was hard. Hail Hail is also top 10. Between that round and this, that's 4 songs in my top 10.
