I don't notice it on studio songs. What studio songs have the ticks and tricks?

I just wish they'd stop with the sappy songs. Sirens sounds better down tuned. Ed tends to ham it up every once in a while. The worst shows were the ones where he gets too fucked up. I'm glad I stopped listening for awhile. The thing he does that bugs me is that creepy low growl when he sings Mother or Crazy Mary sometimes. Honestly, though there are some really good shows, considering how his voice has changed. I think he sounds better now than he did in 2009.
I haven't really cared for the last couple of records that much. They're okay, but don't compare to anything before it. I like the Avacado Deluxe better than the original album, too. The re-records on Lost Dogs is really when they lost me in the studio. I understood touching up the Binaural (except Drifting) and Riot Act songs, but the ones from Ten? They butchered Dirty Frank and Brother, too.

I just wish they weren't creatively bankrupt, or would have the balls to call it quits.

Yep. I hope they don't become one of those bands that just tours. If they can't put together a full record, how about 5-6 stellar songs? I would be happy with that or even an import single...

They are the band that just tours (barely). Ever since they started playing festivals again.

I love how a lot of the songs turned out live. Once they got going, those songs sounded really good. Really, the 2nd leg, Europe and the Fall 2014 Tour. I guess I prefer the records to be recorded a little more raw. Some of LB sounded too perfect. A few songs sounded excellent, though. I think Ed has adjusted a lot more since Backspacer and sounds better now than he did in 2009.
I was listening to the Memphis show and he was talking about recording Sirens with a cold and that B'OB pushed for that and said that it would sound good. Makes me wonder if he wants to record during allergy season.

The only time Ed didn't sound like he had a cold was on Mankind.

Ed's voice is the least of my worries nowadays, it's the crappy songs that I worry about. Ed sounds fine on most of LB, he's just too loud.

I think LB is the album where Ed sounds the worst.

I'd say 2006 was the last tour that he sounded consistently great. Although he sounds great on these Who songs from 08:

There's no doubt he doubled down on the annoying tics starting around 2009.
But I've been to a lot of shows since then and when you're in the moment he still sounds good. He certainly doesn't distract from the feel and flow of the evening. And that's all that matters.
And for the record (pun intended), I think he sounds mostly good on the studio recordings as well. He would benefit from better production/mixing to be sure.
Also, he's got a nice range he could retreat to (most of Riot Act, Into the Wild, etc) but I think starting in 2006 he decided to just fucking go for it while he still (kinda) could. Subconsciously or not, he's raging against the dying of the light.

Agree here. I really tried to listen during some recent shows in 14 and 16 and it was harder to hear the annoying tics, etc vs listening to the boots. Weird.

is there a correlation between his botox and hair plugs?
sometimes the hair plugs can impact your voice
