But, if I had to choose the best period of the band, it'd be 1994-2000 - a much more creative band and Ed's talents as an all-around singer improved dramatically.

yea but come on...sometimes being a fan is more than that. I do agree with you about the period though.

in fact not having the emotional baggage from "being there" probably lets you judge more objectively

Yes, you are wrong. While yeah, this era is what got me interested, the Vitalogy-Merkin Ball-No Code stretch is really what elevated them to favorite band territory for me.

Me too BUT No Code was a TREMENDOUS let down for me

They were a force of nature in those years. I think they've all improved in terms of craft since there, but they were tapping into something there that I never expect to experience again.

Count me as another one who's not a huge fan of this era. I didn't grow up with them so maybe that's it.

I find that awkward and embarrassing to watch. I never really cared for the band till Vitalogy. Ten is pretty close to hair metal but is enjoyable as some hair metal is. I much prefer 1994 - 1998.

I really don't care for Dave A's drumming.

Just because Eddie was louder, and a little off his rocker, doesn't make it better. It did when I first got into Pearl Jam, because that intensity is so engaging.

Hell, IMO his voice didn't even dip at all until 95ish, (and then came back better than ever for a few years) and by then Vitalogy existed, so.

ten era pearl jam was great but they got so much better just 2 years later

im not sure if you arent familiar with hair metal or you arent familiar w/ ten. by the late 80s hair metal was simply pop songs for teenage girls by dudes dressed like morons. the album ten can be argued as a concept album about death. it has pop-rock songs, but it also has anthems, ballads, straight up hard rock and whatever you wanna call release. hair metal and the album ten have nothing in common except for the time and place. the closest thing you can compare it to is appetite for destruction, but i dont thing gnr were hair metal.

I think i am pretty objective, my fav albums are no code and yield, ten and vs are near the bottom, but no where near dismissable, they are amazing albums, but they certainly did get much better on the run from vitalogy through binaural, those 4 albums are just amazing
