Started rewatching DS9. It's better than I remember, but Avery Brooks is HORRIBLE. What a nutty guy.

DS9 is the best. Brooks does tend to over emote but he settles down for the most part.

I still haven't finished DS9. I want to get to the "good" era but God there are just so many episodes.

Re: Live Long and Prosper; the Trek Thread
DS9's best stuff is stellar. A few of its humor episodes are genuinely funny, too, which is a nice surprise for any Trek. I like the premise, and when the writing gets daring (Kira's mother's story, the religious stuff, Sisko assisting in a murder for political ends), it's great. O'Brien and Bashir's friendship was handled better than any since Kirk and Spock's, which took some of the growing stiffness out of the intrapersonal storytelling.
But most of the early stuff shows signs of the brand weariness that would define Voyager (ok, which character will be this series's outcast trying to fit in? Which one will be the brilliant engineer who is always just a little too good to let anything stay a threat? Who will be the second in command that our captain grows to trust more than anything else? Oh guys we don't have a Worf yet BRING IN THE WORF), and a lot of the "war" seasons suffer for the fact that Star Trek has never been any good at coreographing space battles.
And yes...Avery Brooks is absolutely insane. He is beyond terrible most of the time, but he does play the father-son stuff really well. It's almost jarring when he switches between "command scene" and "hey good Jake is here." It's like suddenly he remembers how human beings behave. And then it's back to space mumbo jumbo, the switch flips, and he's back to doing whatever it is he was doing there.
I do wish they'd killed Worf (we've all been waiting for it) and let that cigar chompin' one-eyed maniac just be their guy. He was way more fun.

Excluding Patrick Stewart (would he be the obvious choice?) who was the best actor on Trek?

Colm Meaney is in a league of his own on DS9 at least. Everyone else is turned up to eleven. I'm sure they calm down later on, though.bada wrote:Excluding Patrick Stewart (would he be the obvious choice?) who was the best actor on Trek?

Brent Spiner is incredible in TNG. It's honestly one of my favorite portrayals of all time.

Brent is great in that role. He's terrible whenever they try to find excuses to let him branch out though.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Brent Spiner is incredible in TNG. It's honestly one of my favorite portrayals of all time.
Listening to them talk about the way they developed the characters in the Spock documentary gave me a fresh appreciation for both Nimoy and Shatner, actually.

Re: Live Long and Prosper; the Trek Thread
I hope the alien race the Enterprise encounters in the new Star Trek film is comprised of over-weight, washed-up comedians with some cubes painted on their faces.
We need more aliens with face paint.

I feel like the crew of the Enterprise was overly icy to Q. Even when it was clear he changed they always acted like he was the worst. Their reactions were so over the top.

I don't know, man. Given that first impression, I get it. That kinda shit is hard to overcome, even for humans in Roddenberry's utopian view of humanity.bada wrote:I feel like the crew of the Enterprise was overly icy to Q. Picard's personality totally changed on the Q episodes. He was a little ridiculous.
