Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Too theatrical for me.
yeah they're something more

I was only joking, but in what world is Fantomas nu metal?

Meshuggah
Gojira
Strapping Young Lad
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Lamb of God

(I’m still joking)

I'm assuming Tool's musicianship keeps them out of this realm and closer to the prog world, but what is APC? They seem in the ballpark of some of this post-grunge stuff to me...

i agree they are prog-rock, but it's not the musicianship, it's the songwriting
That's what I meant -- the complex suites, the odd time signatures, the technicalities -- things that are components of "musicianship," I'd say.

I'd love Tool if it wasn't for Maynard.

Tool is a mix of Alternative Metal and Progressive Metal. APC is mostly just Alternative Metal/Rock.

Did nu stand for something or was it just a trendy late 90s way to spell new

Speaking of APC, I think the music video for "Judith" might be my favorite performance-based music video of all time. So much of it is about the process of performance, focusing on the little moments -- adjusting the sound board, the guitarist picking up the slide, Paz tying her hair up during her brief break, Maynard setting the water bottle down. I wish it didn't have the goofy film effects but it's really good otherwise.
