12/50 Books
  • Cable & Deadpool, Volume 1: If Looks Could Kill by Fabian Nicieza (GN)
Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) by Hugh Howey
Wrapped-Up FoxTrot: A Treasury with the Final Daily Strips by Bill Amend
Space Unicorn Blues by T.J. Berry
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling
Breach (Cold War Magic #1) by W.L. Goodwater
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse by Steve Behling
Hark! the Herald Angels Scream: An Anthology by Christopher Golden (Editor)
Atomic Marriage by Curtis Sittenfeld (AB)
The Winter of Frankie Machine by Don Winslow (AB)
    Seed by Ania Ahlborn (AB)
Oak Avenue (Dark Corners Collection #7) by Brandi Reeds (AB)
The Remedy (Dark Corners Collection #6) by Adam Haslett (AB)
The Tangled Woods (Dark Corners Collection #5) by Emily Raboteau (AB)
Frankie Machine was great, like a mob murder mystery with a wise guy enforcer in the detective role.

Atomic Marriage was very middling and the narration was the best thing about it.

Seed was bad. Every single time something started to work the author would make the husband do something exactly counter to what should be happening. It was a complete shit show. Even the "wild ending" that reviews talked about was terrible. Straight out of a 90's horror serialized television show for it's inability to make you care.

Oak Avenue was not a good story, and the terrible narrator did not help things. Her guy voice made it sound like the voice you'd use back in the 90's to make fun of retarded people* and it was really jarring.

The Remedy had a better narrator and was just OK right up to the end where the Remedy is realized. Bold choice.

The Tangled Woods was also pretty bad but the description of the hell that is Great Wolf Lodge was pretty spot on. Like, I could see them suing him for how close it comes to being libel. Also the main character made me think of LV for some reason.
Poison-tongued film critic Reginald Wright is known for his creative insults and intolerance for the garbage culture, insufferable rudeness, and thoughtless racism of predictably common people.
Also the ending would have been much better if the kid had killed the guy instead of the guy committing suicide. Would have been a stronger horror story instead of a really bad Black Mirror episode.

There are seven short stories in the series and I wanted to review them as I read them but will be amending the count to be for the series as a whole.

*
Spoiler: show
You know, back when people were terrible people out in the open and didn't try to hide behind anything.

Yeah. It was definitely in the neighborhood of movies like Citizen Kane and The Graduate which I saw and already felt like I knew the beats of due to the amount of times I've seen it parodied or given homage. But I'd never sat down to watch the whole thing before.

Not incredibly entertaining but good, if that makes sense. Impressive at times, and gripping at others, but I was in no rush afterwards to sing its praises or to re-watch.

How’d you like Dr. No? It’s my favorite Bond movie.

And is Seventh Seal your first Bergman?

Dr. No was good. I've seen bits and pieces of the Connery Bonds but only Never Say Never Again in its entirety. That was my first Bond movie. Though outside of the beginning I don't remember any of it. I've seen all the Bonds after that. None of the Moores except for maybe half of Live and Let Die a million years ago. I'm looking forward to watching the ones I've missed. Seventh Seal was my first Bergman. I avoided him in my youth cause it looked like homework but I've grown up...a little. I liked it but I think I made a mistake watching it with the english dub but I was too lazy to find a sub title file. The dub seemed accurate but it took me out of it a bit. I'll probably watch it again with sub titles.

Oof, dubbed Bergman...yeah that’s definitely a huge mistake

The Seventh Seal is actually a pretty fun movie. Bergman is playful more often than his reputation leads one to believe.
