Actually this release reminds me that it is quite easy to romanticize this period of pearl jam.

i never really got into the 93 shows. 94 was a different beast altogether.

I want a set of all the 94 shows. That's my grail that will never happen.

I don't know how '93 measures up to '94, but I enjoyed this much more than any shows I purchased from the past decade.

A '96 or March '98 show is really the only Pearl Jam release I can see getting excited about at this point. There's enough Abbruzzese-era stuff already out there, officially or in high-quality bootleg form, to satisfy my craving for it, and certainly enough Cameron-era stuff. Honestly I feel like I've kind of struggled to engage with the Vault project in general, even though there have absolutely been some excellent releases. I think I just always expected some grand revelation from high-quality versions of these old shows, but I've also gotten so saturated on live Pearl Jam over the years that it's probably impossible for any show not to sound like just another show. What am I going to hear in one more version of "Corduroy" or "Given to Fly" or "Do the Evolution" that I haven't heard somewhere in the first 100-200 versions?

I think the answer is either going to be "Jack Irons's drums" or "probably nothing."

Dave A was such an integral part of their sound

Ah, they wouldn't let me past the gatekeeper, my 10C credentials are about fifteen years expired.

Nothing specifically against the Vault shows, I certainly don't mean to suggest that I haven't enjoyed them (for the most part) or been happy to see them released. But, I certainly would not have predicted even 5 years ago that the experience of getting, say, two professionally recorded and mixed '98 shows would have felt so...business as usual. Probably just an indication of how my relationship with the band has changed.

tremor christ is a mess and it's still fine - would take it that way over 80% of the rest of the catalogue

pro-tip: don't listen to your vault releases on early weekdays during the workweek

instead listen to them on nights before lengthy vacations, with lots of alcohol, on real speakers

This is why the Temple of the Dog reunion was so great. It paired mature PJ backing with legendary spirit animal (that could still sing).

Listening to these older shows with more mature ears - it’s amazing Ed didn’t lose his voice much sooner. Geezes he could fucking wail.

yeah, he really pushed it. But its worse on 1995 i think.
