I would argue that their first excellent record was Lifes Rich Pageant. And their next was Automatic. While I agree they were consistent, they don't fit this topic for me.

Cavedweller was awful.
I thought it was pretty good but I haven’t listened to it in a while.

Lots of bands and artists here that don't fit the description. R.E.M or Pearl Jam doesn't either, but they are still two of the most consistent bands around. If R.E.M and Pearl Jam both quit in the mid 90s, they would have been perfect additions.

I am sure I would get a lot of argument about this but My Morning Jacket might fit. The Tennessee Fire, Evil Urges, and The Waterfall might be places of argument here, but I could make the case for each of them being excellent.
