Maybe Ed, Stone, and Mike read the Wiki article on ...And Justice For All and thought it would be funny to haze Jeff 30 years after the fact

Stylistically, this reminds of a better version of what Sturgill Simpson was going for on Sound & Fury. Tight, but also kinda trashy and garagey.

The albums even pair together pretty well, thematically.

And S&F has a song called "Mercury in Retrograde."

Hmm.

Huh, guess the leak was not at fault after all. Bass stilö was to quiet and guitars still thin. Still loving it, though.

“Take the Long Way”
I don’t think it was necessarily written for Soundgarden, but when you hear a Matt song, you hear exactly what he brought to that band. These guys are always recording or demoing something. They’re so creative. This is a song Matt had demoed at another studio here in town amongst all the other songs he was working on. He brought it to the band and they were like, this is ridiculous! It has these layered background vocals from Meagan Grandall of the Seattle band Lemolo. The producer, Nate Yaccino, who Matt was doing demos with, was also working with her. So she threw some vocals on it just for fun. I certainly wouldn’t have had the creativity to go, oh, this Judas Priest/Soundgarden song needs some dreamy, layered, synthesized vocals on top (laughs). Because it evolved backwards from there, it just works. Matt plays some guitar on the chorus but it ended up being mostly Mike playing the rhythm parts — those are his metal roots coming out. Stone plays that Mudhoney, fuzzed-out guitar stuff.

From the Variety article. I knew I was onto something when I referenced earlier in the thread that this had a Priest/metal vibe.

I'm a know-nothing when it comes to this stuff, can listen to music and generally not notice something like this. But the lack of bass is painfully obvious here, even to me.

I'm coming to like this quite a bit more, especially the outro. But I put it on in the car today and jacked the bass up just to confirm that it's really barely there. Wish it weren't so.

I still can’t get into this song. I like the chorus (I’m assuming this is the song with the female vocalist)

I was excited to get a Matt Cameron song, because I like In the Moonlight, Evacuation and You Are.

But I’m having a hard time with this one.

I THINK my favorite Cameron penned PJ tune is You Are, I might be missing another, but I’m confident this will surpass that. There’s a few really excellent parts in this for me. The guitars are cool, chorus is catchy, I like the “Now’s the time to resurface...”, the solo works, but these last fucking verses... “plant the seed...in your mind” and the shit going on behind Ed....

This is moving WAY up for me.

shit, the "I always take the long way" part (minus "leads me back to you") is the same riff / are the same chords as SOLAT

Yep.
This song gets worse for me. This is the filler of the album.
