This is another difference between us. Ed ending that compulsion is a huge step in the right direction in the evolution of the band. It also shows so much growth in him as a singer and a collaborator.

I don't totally agree with this, but we're headed in the same direction...
I don't think there's any more maturity in letting the outros breathe than not. But I do think that around Vitalogy, he got more comfortable hanging back and letting the music exist on its own. And then I think about what he said during SVT, about how he was embarrassed to be a lead singer... And now he crams so many syllables into each song. Kind of wish he'd let things breath a bit more again.
Maturity insofar as he didn't need the security blanket anymore and he learned to trust his band mates.
I think on Ten he felt his job was 'words' and vocals. If he wasn't vocalizing he wasn't doing his job. He grew out of that I think.

i also think he started dialing back the outro vocals when he started playing more guitar. in the first couple of albums, maybe he felt the need to BE THERE. then add in trag's point, plus him playing more guitar, and his contributions became different at the end of songs

That's a good point.

I think the "heeeeee heeeeee heeeeeee" thing he does now is kind of the modern day equivalent
Things were better in the old days

Could be. What I liked about his vamping was the way it connected the outros more concretely to the core song - made them feel more like a continuation rather punctuation.

Not a complaint at all I'm just curious. How come this version didn't make the cut I figured it'd be in the demo section? It was always my favorite version.
