So none of them realized 5 months had elapsed, right?
If we assume that Milchick is telling the truth about the time frame, yes. I'm not sure we can (or should) trust any of that yet until we have more info. But for the sake of this conversation, that's right.
But why would they realize it?

That’s part of my query. Were they on the outside the entire time? If not, did something happen that they don’t remember 5 months of their lives?

The Innies only exist on the severed floor. Unless the OTP is activated. Dylan activates the OTP for Mark, Helly, and Irv. While Dylan is holding the switch, they exist outside the severed floor. As soon as he lets go, the Outies take over again and the Innies essentially don't exist until the go down the elevator and their chip is activated. So, they wouldn't remember anything from the switch to the elevator.
The one exception, I think, is Dylan. I'm very excited to see what the deal is there, why he doesn't remember the last 5 months. But the others make total sense.

Right. So they were Outies for 5 months, I guess?

Yes. I think that's what we're supposed to believe at this point right now. This is the first time in 5 months that any of them have gone down the elevator to the severed floor.
That's why all of them are yelling the same thing as the elevator door opens that they were yelling when we last saw them in the outside world. Irv banging on the door yelling for Burt, for example.

But.... all the info we've gotten has come from Luman. So, grain of salt everything until we know more, obviously.

It seemed like the new MDRers had been there for a while, so unless we’re distrusting them, too, I think we can trust the timeline.
I think what’s a bigger question (and I’m much more interested to see) is if Lumon’s story about why Mark S was the only innie who returned lines up with reality. We know so little about Dylan and Irv and their reasons for joining Lumon that I don’t think we can judge yet whether they would really refuse to come back—and if they did, then how Milchick convinced them to come back will be great to see, too.

I don't think we can trust anything in Lumon at this point. I'm not even sure those new MDRers were MDRers. Or Severed. Or any of that. Maybe all of that is true... but I'm just not ready to assume anything. We'll see what happens in the coming weeks. A lot of questions, a lot of what ifs.

Banger of an episode. Riveting. This is a no-second-screen show which is about as rare as it gets these days.

I mean, that's how I watch every show. So... Not that unusual for me. But fuck this show is great.

Definitely not. Everything except Mark actually choosing to come back was a lie.
My favorite scene in this episode was the door factory.

Same.
For those that don't know, the show's creator Dan Erickson, worked at a door manufacturer when he first moved to LA after graduating from NYU's writing program. Most of the idea for Severance came from that experience. So, a little extra pineapple on top of that scene.

- There's a theory that Helene goes back to the severed floor unsevered. She's still Helene, not Helly. She is still her Outie when she returns. This episode made me wonder... if that's the case (and it really seems like it is) does anyone but Helene know? I wonder if she returned unsevered without the authorization/knowledge of The Board or anyone else at Lumon.
