My boss just got a new "assistant" who is acting like she's in charge, and the boss seems to be OK with it cause she's like an old lady I guess, and so I just sent her an e-mail after she said something bossy, asking her nicely if she's now in a supervisory role to my department because I would like transparency as to who my superiors are. Hopefully she gets the message and backs off. Too many damn straws on my back today.

I asked nicely for transparency. My coworkers were also confused. Turns out she was promoted to a supervisory role after all. I said thank you for clarifying. This sucks.

pro tip: whenever you want to send an email like that at work type it up, save it to drafts, and revisit the decision 24 hours later

It wasn't rude. Lady's been on my case hardcore lately and at least now she knows I have some balls to stand up for myself a little bit, anyway.

Don't you think they should've announced she was our supervisor before she went around telling people what to do? Typically they will send out these e-mail announcements. She was being rude as hell to me and I thought she was just the new timekeeper.

it's just good practice to give the boss's assistant some level of deference

It's also good practice to not treat your "employees" like shit. Especially when you don't even introduce yourself as their superior.

I've been working here about 8 years now and I'm in a union. They can't just fire me for asking honest questions.

Send her a follow-up email asking how she'd react if her child came out to them as feline

People think I’m timid because I’m quiet. I guarantee you she will start being a little kinder when asking me to do something in the future after that email. It was intelligently worded, kind and bold.
