Yep, I gave it 5.
I think so too. It really gets better with each listen. It could rival many of the classic PJ openers. I guess time will tell.
I haven't liked an album opener this much since Last Exit.

I might agree with you. Brain of J. is awesome. Last Exit is top ten (maybe top five) for me, so that will be tough to pass.

Well there's a perfect comparison. Last Exit. Getaway is not even in the same ballpark.

do you? because everything in modern rock is pretty fucking easy to play.
i don't get this critic either. the guy is most likely a troll or at least acts like one but i'll share my two cents about this anyway: simplicity is a key ingredient to the best rock music. if you want immediacy you don't write a 10 minutes epic with several meters and wild scales explorations. when i was a teenager i used to listen to a lot of prog, thinking that it was where it's at but i came to realize that a lot of the attitude behind that music is insecurity mixed with disproportionate egos. like those musicians can't face simple issues simply because that would seem "lazy" or "boring" so they'll complexify their raw feelings to a point where most humans will feel repelled by such a "rich vocabulary" when in fact, it's just a maladroit acknowledgement of their inability to be honest, have fun and talk to ladies. i think that, ideally, great musical knowledge and ability should be used to get your point across more efficiently, same with a rich vocabulary - it should help you describe something more precisely in your own way, that is way more impressive if people can relate.
the point was that the "easiness" is a reflection of the lack of effort occurring with the new material. the statement was in the context of a rant about new PJ being average and uninspiring. Not a manifesto about how only complex music is good music.

three chords of rockin in the free world with some hearty singing and guitar licks has been shown to tear the roof off of a place. there is power in the simplicity of that song.

PJ should be embarassed that this is their best foot forward now.

There used to be more passion in the simple stuff that carried it from "ample" into "great".

This new crap, most of BS included, is neither simple yet powerful nor simple yet contemplative. Its just simple. They are capable of better, and that is what makes it so frustrating. (MYM excluded)

The generic verse-repetition plus "Doo-Rock" (Doo Wop meets Rock) bridges and choruses that seem to permeate on the new PJ are just not breaking out of "ample". They are often drooping down into "insufficient".

But it is ultimately a matter of personal taste. Some easily-impressed wieners might like this stuff. Or people who have no balls. And that's their prerogative.

But PJ are capable of better, and that is what makes it so frustrating. They are not bringing their NBA Finals quality game to the studio. They are bringing tuesday night versus the bobcats 82-game NBA regular season quality game. They can do better.

BOB is not bringing their best out of them. He is bringing what he thinks is the cutest iCommercially-viable package out of them.

Getaway is a great example where MUSICALLY, the song is pretty cool. The vocal is, well, shite. Ed has gone from being one of the best enunciators to being an over-the-top, sloppy vocalist.

Settle down on the syllables, FFS.

Ed sounds great in this song. There are plenty of songs that his vocals (particularly his enunciation) that gets in the way. But this isn't one of them.

Also, it's not syllables that he over enunciates, it's vowels.

OK, well I just completely disagree. It is way too wordy for my ears, to the point where many of the new songs are almost unlistenable to me.

I understand what you're saying about his technique as of late but I don't think this song suffers from that in any way. he sounds great here. And as far as the past goes, there were plenty of songs you couldn't even understand what the fuck Ed was saying half the time. lol I mean it was even a platform for several running jokes back in the day. SNL, Celebrity Death Match, a few funny wrong lyrics videos on Youtube...Almost every live show I've heard in the last few years though are almost cringe worthy at many points do to his over enunciation on many songs, but on studio albums I haven't really heard a problem yet and definitely not in this song.

yes so many of them are so damn wordy. its not like his voice is another instrument in the song, weaving in, weaving out. he's become a play-by-play sportscaster narrating over all activity at all times.

"All alone and sinking is the bow" is the lyric I hear before the chorus.

Fair point re: not being able to understand what he's singing.

What I am suggesting is, there is far too much "going on" with Ed's vocals these days, mainly on the up tempo songs. It's like he can't deliver it properly. I get the "well, that's just how he sings now" comments - and I don't expect him to sing like he did 20 years ago - it just does not sound good, to my ears.

The comparison of Last Exit to Getaway that someone raised earlier is perfect for my argument. He doesn't "over-sing" Last Exit. It's perfect delivery. But he over-signs, and over-inflects, on most up-beat songs on the last 3 albums, and I just fucking hate it.

To follow up, my dislike of the new material stems from them not writing the types of songs I think they would nail, as opposed the music being complete shite. And this is my own issue.

It's just that for me, ever since S/T, I do not enjoy the new music like I once did, and have moved on from it. I have held out hope for a long time. I've basically given up, as of Friday, when I heard these leaks. It's just monotonous boring lame music for me.

Getaway is the best opener since Last Exit, for me. Ed sounds great and his delivery is spot on. The groove and vocal melody makes this song. This is how I want PJ to sound.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

MYM is just as "simple and unclever" as everything you've mentioned here, you just like it more because it's got bigger guitars.

Well thank God I haven't heard these other songs ... And maybe Ed hasn't either? :)
