cutuphalfdead wrote:WAV is a format that contains raw PCM audio. PCM is the digital standard for expressing audio as a series of 1s and 0s. CDs use another format called Red Book that also contains raw PCM audio. But WAV became the standard for computers way back in the day.
FLAC and Apple Lossless are two competing formats that more efficiently code that audio without discarding any pieces of the audio itself. That's why it's called lossless. It's a form of file compression that doesn't lose any of the actual data. It's just a more efficient way to write it.
MP3 is lossy. It takes away tiny bits of audio data and the playback algorithm guesses what those bits should sound like based on the bits surrounding them. Kind of like removing every 4th frame of a movie and having a computer redraw those frames based on what's seen in frame 3 and 5. They also chop off the frequencies which are above the audible human range. Even though you technially can't hear those frequencies, the result of losing them, along with the missing pieces that are being redrawn, is that flat, 2-dimensional sound of an mp3.
Yes. And like an asshole I just bought Sirens from the 10c. But, damn if it doesn't sound amazing in Lossless format with good headphones. Ed sounds like a crackling fire. I already liked the song but it is worth it to jump through the hoops for the lossless stuff.cutuphalfdead wrote:AllNiteThing wrote:With headphones it's like listening to an album for the first time, even if you've been familiar with it for decades.![]()
Nothing beats lossless audio and a nice set of cans.

YEa, its already been established they are different. I fucking love the live version. Love
oh! Yea, fuck BOB for sure.

Nope, and I already have a rip, so yeah, I'm an idiot but usually that costs me more than a buck.AllNiteThing wrote:Dugg wrote:Yes. And like an asshole I just bought Sirens from the 10c. You didn't preorder the album through them? If you did, the download link for the single would be in your order history automatically, for free.

About 96% of Spenno's brain is made up of wailing, unmusical guitar feedback and deliberately abrasive white noise, but there is a very vocal portion of that 4% that is responsible for his seemingly anomalous embrace of songs like "Sirens" and TV shows like "Gilmore Girls" and "Bunheads." It rises to the surface without much sense of consistency but does so sternly and demands to be seen, not unlike a Whack-a-Mole. For that reason Spenno is one of my go-to RM'ers; I never miss a thread wherein his name appears in the "last post" column, much the same as I can never walk through a Chuck E. Cheese's without making a pit stop at Whack-a-Mole.cutuphalfdead wrote:You like this shit?Birds in Hell wrote:- there's a video of the band playing the song live (in a studio, anyway)cutuphalfdead wrote:I haven't paid attention to anything today. - if you pre-ordered the album through 10C you can download Sirens in MP3/FLAC from pearljam.com
Oh, and I like the song; that's clearly news.
