No Code was quite disappointing when it came out, I was still with the grunge sound in my ears of the first 3 records, and this album was a complete departure of that, quite different, not a bad record, but extremely experimental and odd at the time. I remember how much I hated the reviews of the record, but I didn't care I liked this record a lot. There are great songs on this album that I always listen like Sometimes, Off He Goes, Red Mosquito, Lukin, Present Tense.

Funny, I remember the reviews of this album were really strong but the backlash was more from fans who wanted the band to release another Ten (by this time there was already some backlash over the fact that Vitalogy was too much of a departure).

I used to think it was too. But the focus dissolves after present tense. It's like they just go 'fuck it'. And it's not just song choice.

Sure, but I think it works.

In an album where there is tons of instrospection and heavy ideas, Mankind serves the purpose of lightening the load a little. It's no Don't Gimme No Lip in that regard, but it manages to be both an easily digestible song in an album that requires years of listening, and takes a massive leap of making Stone the lead singer when the band's identity was so tied to Eddie Vedder - especially at the time. In other words, I am all for Mankind.

Agreed. I always thought that was kind of the point of No Code to an extent

They don't call it "full of code" for nothing.

Guys, no code has nothing to do with "a lack (or presence) of encoded messages". It means Do Not Resuscitate, like the band was "dying" away from the mainstream and they didn't want to be brought back to life.

This one has the best whole side of any PJ record. Sometimes through Smile. Doesn't get better than that anywhere in their entire catalogue.

I think Ten, Vitalogy, Backspacer, and S/T have a better run of 1-5 songs. Probably Vs. too.
Definitely better than Riot act and Binaural though!

I remember back in my primitive RM days everyone would rave about No Code and I was always like "nah it sucks"
I can proudly say I'm now at that stage of enlightenment and No Code is by far my favourite Pearl Jam album and I would happily throw away every other PJ album just to have this one.
