Get lucky by daft punk was one of the best songs of the year. Despite being a victim of its own success.

Also, Dumb disco ideas by Holy Ghost is a great song.

This album (and this song in particular) shattered my perceptions of what you could expect from a traditional rock band two decades into their career. It is simultaneously true to who they are while also sounding like absolutely nothing else they've ever done before. And even if you have no knowledge of them, it's just a killer fucking song. Intelligent, insightful, angry, dramatic, daring. Great music, great lyrics, great production, great performance. I ended up (unfairly, but for good reason) making a lot of comparisons between this album and Lightning Bolt (my two favorite bands, both releasing their first album of their third decade together merely weeks apart; It was inevitbale), and it probably caused me to be harsher on LB than I should have been. I can't help it though.

And yes, stip, I know you won't like it because of the vocals.
:)
this was probably the best manic street preachers song you've posted thus far.

also, you're way too hard on lightning bolt, which, based on this thread, I am almost ready to call the album of the year

If you want to know what it's like to talk music with you, just imagine how you feel when you talk politics with IlluminEddie (or any libertarian)

lets not say things we can't take back

(also, despite my issues with libertarianism as a philosophy, the problem with illumineddie is not libertarianism)

(in his case it is entirely craziness. it's not hard to talk to people with different ideologies)

don't you have more songs to link for me not to like, or were you only into one thing this entire year? I've got an entire year of not listening to new music to make up for in this thread

(yeah but sometimes there's such a fundamental difference in how you see things that you know you'll never agree)

I posted two songs!

I have liked a lot of things this year but it's hard for me to list songs as I tend to favor full albums over individual tracks, and even when something stands out I think it works better in context most of the time. It's even worse when it comes to instrumental music... Also, to be honest, my taste doesn't align very well with most people around here so it doesn't look like trying to come up with my "best songs" would be worth the effort.

I recall liking these though:

Tavaputs - The Uncertain Road

HBS - Collide

The Icarus Line - City Job

Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite - I Ride at Dawn

Chelsea Wolfe - We Hit A Wall

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Bad Man

Chuck Johnson - On A Slow Passing In Ghost Town

Wooden Wand - Southern Colorado Song

Ora Cogan - Summer Wine

Merchandise - I'll Be Gone

Hebronix - Unreal

Flying Horseman - One Note Song

I know I'm forgetting a ton of stuff, I'll have to go through my favorite albums and add more stuff.

it's not fair to rank on just one listen, and there's too many songs to get to 27

It'll get another full listen (maybe even two) during my twenty hours of driving tomorrow and Friday, so I suppose if there ever a time for my opinion to change a bit, this could be it.

That being said, I don't see how it could ever enter the same stratosphere are the Manics, CHVRCHES, or Janelle Monae albums for me. All three of those were more or less instant classics in my world.

I wanted to like that album, and some of it is ok, but without Homme, they are missing a lot.

I find it fairly impossible to talk to Tories.

Having said that:

1) I really, really don't like the Manic Street Preachers. Never did. Sorry, Lament.

2) Phosphorescent. I want to hear more. Where shalt I go?

It'll definitely scratch a different itch than Chvrches or Janelle Monae.

Yeah. It doesn't need to be as good as those.
