Apparently the curling up in a ball approach only works with brown bears and grizzlies. If you're happened upon by a black bear, you had better get ready to fight for your life.

I thought black bears were wusses. Although, I guess what you said could be consistent with previous Californians eating grizzlies into extinction, while the black bear is fairly common in wilderness areas.
