On the other hand, this is the one issue that does seem to unite extremes across the religious right, the hippie left, and the paranoid libertarian.

Is Lyme disease such an issue because the symptoms are inconclusive and most of the time people don't realize that they've been exposed to the vector?

Yes.

It's also hard to test for. There can be a lot of false positives before something conclusive comes back. The spirochete can also hide from antibiotics.

I think the biggest issues is that the CDC guidelines say 4 weeks of antibiotics will wipe it out and if symptoms persist, then it's not lyme disease. If doctors continue with treatment (long-term treatment is the only thing that works for some people) you are essentially violiating CDC guidelines and can risk losing your license.

(My wife had it for five years and went undiagnosed for over a year. She had to quit her job because she couldn't even get out of bed some days.)

My wife was just diagnosed with it. We are actually relieved we thought it was RA.
