I had to stop after track 7 (Blood on the Leaves). That thing almost gave me an aneurism.

C'mon man, the Strange Fruit/C Murder sample?. Usually I can't give two shits about him, but I really liked that track.

Thanks dct.
Fundamentally, this is like Wilco following "YHF" with "Ghost is Born," or Springsteen following "The River" with "Nebraska"--raw minimalism as a response to bombastic excess, which is a great formula that's served many artists well. I'm not sure Kanye is going to end up being one of them, though. "Black Skinhead" and "New Slaves" are the only songs doing anything at all for me on first listen--everywhere else this just seems to be a showcase for all of his worst qualities and none of his best ones. I love the idea but there's just no follow through. On first listen I'd surmise it's his worst album by some distance.

I was into it for the first few minutes. In fact, it was the ONLY song I was into, at first. But the wind down is... unbearable. The repetition and the noise... it just broke me.

You're welcome.
I was hoping you could shed some light; as you're a much bigger fan than I, and I respect your opinion. I look forward to your take on any album. Even by artists that I'm not 100% sold on. But if you aren't finding much to latch onto, maybe there's nothing there. Sorry you didn't like it, but I'm also relieved. If that makes sense.
Anyway, to me the whole thing is just derivative noise. It's not "raw" or "minimalist." It's obvious and uninspired and lazy. It's borderline offensive at turns and it's full of ego and vanity and hubris. Even when the beats are infectious (few and far between), the lyrics are abysmal and trite and ugly. Even when the samples are fun (usually they're just obvious and cringe-worthy) the rest of the song is repetitive and his delivery is awful. This makes him seem like a talentless hack. Honestly, it makes him seem like an incompetent imposter.
The album sounds like masturbation; delusional and annoying AT IT'S BEST. This isn't abrasive in an interesting way like In Utero or Bone Machine, but rather lazy and loud in place of substantial. Why take a risk when you can auto-tune the fuck out of the thing? I couldn't even stand to listen to the whole thing. Even his other albums, which I've had issues with as well, I've been able to finish. This thing just felt like a waste of time; like a bad joke or one of RM's faithful's lame attempts at a second account. But less interesting.
Burp and fart noise.

Is this getting any love over here? I've been kind of lukewarm on YLT releases since I'm Not Afraid of You... but this one is pretty solid:

Gave it a quick listen a few months back, really liked it.

the new Alela Diane is pretty sweet on first listen
other stuff that's been in rotation lately:
Red Tail Ring - The Heart's Swift Foot (I don't need to describe it, the cover says it all)
BadMusic wrote:
Laura Marling - Once I Was An Eagle (folk)
These two albums are wonderful. I ordered them with birthday bucks and have been listening to them pretty obsessively all week. Thanks RM!

Try the Chuck Johnson album above if you liked William Tyler. Not exactly the same but you might like it.
I've been listening to the new Susanne Abbuehl album 'The Gift' today, it's a beauty. Moody jazz for rainy days. I don't think it's streaming anywhere unfortunately.

Run The Jewels just kicked QOTSA's album out of my 1 spot.

I'm thinking you will be pretty happy within the first 10 seconds. This album is incredible.

I like the samples on the Amazon page. Unusual instrumentation. I'll check it out.

If you like the Tyler record, Steve Gunn's is in a similar vein.
Everything is better with this record playing.
