Well, my wife wanted to check it out so I ended up watching the first two episodes with her.

Mostly, I just wish they had learned the lesson of Fellowship (or A New Hope): start small, with characters who can be your stand-ins as the story evolves. Characters for whom much of what is to come will be as new, or confusing, or surprising, or tensely dramatic as it will be for you the viewer. Then slowly build the rest of your cast around that.

Starting with just Nori and Arondir would have been so much better than this. The harfoot story is about the intrusion of a changing world on peaceful and comfortable tranquility. The elf’s story covers the politics of the elves’ current situation and their terse relationship to middle earth, without the drag of walking and talking and walking and talking. It also introduces the return of evil in a much tighter and more “on the ground,” urgent manner than all of that Galadriel stuff.

Galadriel and Elrond just feel like characters we should be meeting along the way, because they are already in some way equipped to respond to these unfolding challenges and their root starting points just aren’t that interesting. Also, bringing them in as the story evolves would’ve protected us from that stupid (and oddly cheap looking) ocean sequence. That raft looked like it needed a rope bridge leading back to the rest of the Great Wolf Lodge.

Anyways, Galadriel playing badass on a cgi glacier with no stakes involved was so much less cool an introduction than one where she sweeps in like hellfire just as some little harfoot characters we’ve had time to grow fond of appear doomed.

Climbing ice walls in search of an undying evil that would quite likely eviscerate you in an instant upon being discovered is pretty badass tho.

That review went on longer than lord of the rings.
It even had a fake ending and then the following post!

I liked all of the setup for Galadriel's story in the first episode, and I was really interested in a version of the story where she's got an obsession with proving to everyone that Sauron is still around and a threat and no one believing her. The king more or less exiling her to heaven makes sense if he doesn't believe her and doesn't want her to stir up trouble. It's a little deflating that he basically gives the order for her to go to Valinor and then admits to Elrond that she was right.

I had very similar feelings about this.

I enjoyed the first two episodes, second more than the first. I don't have too much to say right now, it's still in the early world-building stages. But it's all visually gorgeous and I like the initial story threads. Enough to be optimistic that the show could turn out to be really good.

That would have made it much easier to slide into the world.

That was definitely the low point of an otherwise solid episode.

It was the only point that made sense to the gen pop.

I think they went a little too hard with her determination re Sauron and it got confusing why she was so pissed (I watched it with pals and they didn’t know why she was pissed. Again. ) but that moment reminded them.

Tiny moments like that paint big pictures while we’re looking elsewhere kinda

Episode 3 was fantastic.
