Finally got around to watching John Wick tonight. Enjoyed it so much I’m making it a double feature with Chapter Two.

So, again what ever happened with the american comedy? Another formulaic movie thats so safe and bland it just hurts. Its a shame because Wilde has visual chops for sure, but he chose to make a another cute boring pc ¨comedy¨.
Pretty much. What I hated more than anything was just how many scenes are just set pieces for musical numbers. It’s a LOT — like easily over ten — every time something starts happening, a popular song cranks up and the dialogue cuts out. Became so annoying by the end.
Had a good look and the leads had good chemistry, but all the kids were way too self aware. I accept that today’s youth have a different awareness than my generation, but this was ridiculous. Incredibly formulaic.
oh fuck yeah. I was so bored. So fucking correct...so fucking...yeah all these kids are just...impossible. They are not real at all. The whole thing was a waste of time, and its just not funny. The worst thing is that is trying to be what...a movie for its generation? fuck that.

tragabigzanda wrote:“Not real at all” is the most accurate criticism yet. Both Superbad and Ladybird had characters that felt real, and the trailers made this look like a combination of those two movies. But it was just so hamfisted, all the kids were characitures and then the deluge of musical montages debased them even further.
fuck yeah. Its trying so hard to be cool and real, its a just such a failure it hurts. And the soundtrack is trying sooooo hard, just sooo fucking hard.
Im still interested on Wilde as a filmmaker though. She is interesting.

I didn't say that it's good, though I did enjoy it and am not much interested in debating the cultural opinion of someone who says "pc comedy" without a shred of irony. I said you're wrong about it vis a vis its representations of the youth being more or less realistic than Superbad.

Haven’t seen the movie you guys are talking about, but is it the job of a movie like Superbad to portray kids realistically?

I loved Booksmart.
It's sad that everything now has to be viewed under the current state of constant PC/social justice backlash and can't just be seen as a movie presenting a different perspective. I loved it and I love Pen15 because I know many girls/women who actually talked and feel the same way.
Also, trag's opinion is terrible as usual.

I'd argue that Booksmart was entertaining as well, though again I'm not particularly interested in whether anyone like this specific movie or not. I liked the use of music, it was a little over the top but I thought it captured well the sense of having your expectations pre-programmed, which is what the movie's ultimately kind of about, and it allowed Wilde to do some fun visual storytelling (the pool scene, for example). What I think is wrong, though, is the invocation of realism ("trying so hard to be cool and real"). It's disingenuous. You might dislike the movie, but it makes no promises of being somehow accurate. And I'm doubly suspicious when Superbad is invoked as being somehow different, given that these movies are almost beat-for-beat identical for at least the first ninety minutes. Honestly, it smells of gendered expectations. I don't think this was a perfect movie by any means--the way she gets out of jail was horribly contrived--but it does seem to be being held up to a different standard here than other teen end of school films.
