They’ll keep claiming it’s justified because probably, legally, it is justified under their policies that could be decades old. Just because they are legal policies, don’t make them right.

I work for a city and police department near the St. Louis area. It’s a small department. Police officers and supervisory staff are my co-workers. I deal with them everyday. This department has very stringent hiring practices to weed out possible problem officers. There’s a probationary period that if the new officer isn’t meeting the standards of the department, they can be dismissed. Commanders are constantly updated and enforcing policies to better reflect a more transparent agency. Officers go through a lot of training, and with a lot of medical / doctor facilities in our city, CIT training is expanded. They pride themselves on de-escalating conflicts with minimal use of force tactics.

A lot of this happened pre-Ferguson, but it’s also been expanded Post-Ferguson as well as state/county justice guidelines were changed.

I think all departments need to take a long hard look at their deficiencies and push for changes. It’s the only way you can get the public to trust you again.

None of this matters so long as police unions continue to exist. Qualified immunity is another issue, but thats just about Civil litigation.

Bad actors such as the coward of Broward County will get rehired and receive backpay due to union rules.

Public sector unions shouldn't exist, especially not police unions. If you prefer the status quo where cops can murder and keep their jobs, at least own it.

This is absolutely not binary and to attempt to say so is crazy.

Police unions as they exist are the number one roadblock to actually firing or disciplining bad officers. I can't imagine a union that existed only to bargain for compensation and let the employer set all workplace and punishment policies.

State level LEOBAR laws are another big issue, but I'm not hearing about rolling those back, probably due to public sector solidarity.q

I dont know if "leobar" is a typo or an actual thing, regardless, you dismiss something else everytime you try to pin this on unions. If "bad cops" can't get fired, then how did the man that killed Greg? Lloyd just get fired and arrested for murder?

Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights are state level laws that restrict how police misconduct is investigated among other things. Between that and collective bargaining agreements, officers under investigation for misconduct are provided with all the evidence collected so they can review it before they are asked to make a statement. It allows them to concoct a narrative to make their conduct seem more reasonable in hindsight. It is also something not afforded to non police suspects (civilians get Brady material after charges have been filed, not before).

Bad cops can be fired, but like other union employees they dont stay fired. The Broward County school resource officer that refused to go in and engage the shooter was fired, but just recently adjudicated to have not been fired appropriately so he's been reinstated with back pay.

Separate from union issues, cops that are convicted will frequently get a felony conviction knocked down to a misdemeanor or lesser charge so they dont lose their accreditation. I don't know how frequently this is done for other professional classes. When this occurs, it may be sufficient cause to fire them, but they can often be hired by neighbboring agencies. A lot of shitty cops get traded around in this manner.
