The vocals on Vs - Yield are far more "live" and exposed than the last two albums. All the nooks and crannies are audible...it's very easy, with adequate monitors and a quality setting, to discern that none of the repeated lines are copy-pasted over. Any vocal editing that took place on those records occurred through punch ins and redos. Of course, No Code is incredibly live in design, and most of Betterman is literally a live performance with an acoustic added on top of it.

What we do know (if my memory serves - the link above isn't the quote I was looking for) is that they wanted to step away from the Pro Tools approach for a few albums (around Binaural/Riot Act). To me, that meant they didn't want "perfect" and wanted more "authentic" instead. It also meant they had used Pro Tools in the albums before. So, from my vantage point, one of the many reasons for that move may have been this sort of vocal track editing, which can lend songs to sound too perfect (for lack of a better word) for some people's ears. That's all.

Like I said, ProTools and similar software is so expansive that it's impossible to know what "this is our anti-ProTools album" really means for the record. After all, Ed used ProTools to chop up The Fixer and put it back together as a wholly different song....whereas a track like Low Light still contains finger squeak noises on the acoustic, occasionally pitchy vocals, but includes overdubs.

Anyone who is tiring of this thread should go to the first post of page 1000 and spend some time there. Exemplary.

BoB has said in interviews that he recently went to using CDs because all of his industry mates were doing it; he didn't really give a better reason. I wonder whether this copying and pasting choruses is just still him having heaps of fun with the potential!

Yeah that's kind of weird. If indeed BoB is doing this stuff, and doesn't think anyone will notice, that's what will be damaging to the band's reputation.

If they weren't doing it, yes.

But plenty of bands do it, so it's completely and utterly within the realms of reasonable speculation.

I think Best of You is the only song of theirs I'd leave on if it came on the radio today.

I'm pretty sure I own the first five or six albums. I don't remember enjoying any of them beyond the singles though.

Wasted Light suffers from Pearl Jamitis, in that I like bits of songs but not the entirety of any of them.
