I'm not sure if he's working for Euron at this point. Just because he was contracted by Euron to kill Balon doesn't mean he's still in his employ. Maybe he just has another job to do in Westeros.

Remember, the Braavosi are anti-Targ and anti-Dragon, so there's plenty of reason for the faceless men to need someone in Oldtown.

JH is so much cooler in the books than he is in the show. He's maybe my all time favorite fictional character ever in the books.

You have a point, though Euron is headed to Oldtown, too. Having Jaqen kill Balon, and then both of them independently head to Oldtown seems like a awfully big coincidence for an author who doesn't really do coincidences. Interesting point about the Braavosi, though their anti-Valyrian/anti-slavery ethos doesn't necessarily preclude them from supporting the Targaryens over the Lannisters. The Iron Bank likely fits into that narrative somewhere as well. They are already funding Stannis in the north, and opening up a second front seems to be in their best interests.

I tried to time my re-read to coincide with a December 2017 release date, but that's feeling increasingly unlikely. Now I'm thinking spring 2018, at the earliest.

The faith you guys have in these books coming out is inspiring.

There's really no reason why they won't.

Except all the things we've already discussed that seem to indicate that they won't. You're right. Oh, and then there's the simple fact that... well, they haven't, Pete.

Enough work has gone into the Winds of Winter that I have no doubts about its eventual release. A Dream of Spring? Well..., hopefully he's built up enough momentum to just keep going and plough through it. The end of the story is probably easier to tell, and I'd imagine that he'll have a couple hundred pages that were written for Winds that will find their way into spring. My only concern is that the show finishing his story will sap him of the motivation he'll need to finish. He's also not the healthiest looking 68 year old, so that could be a problem.

he keeps taking on other projects as well.

I would LOVE to see him take the story in a different direction from the show, actually. See an entirely different person end up on the Iron Throne in the books. If such a thing would be narratively possible.

Usually when he finishes a book, he's already got a lot of material written on the next one already. Of course then he rewrites and fixes this and that, and everything takes forever. But I'm pretty sure that once Winds Of Winter is released, he will already be far into the last book.
