I hated him for the longest time Especially up into my mid-twenties. Seems like he got everything wrong and provided zero analytical value.

Something shifted later on and I started to like him more. I'm not sure if he changed or if changed or if we both just moved a little closer toward each other. I really appreciated his work toward the end of his life. Even when I didn't agree with him, which was still often enough, I enjoyed his writing and analysis.

I was thinking/reacting to him in a vacuum, just a singularity, as one reviewer/writer. If we're talking about larger scope and implications on culture, well... I agree to an extent. He and Siskel found a cute way to engage with an audience and that gimmick became a watered down standard. But if we look beyond thumbs, both of them had a lot of insightful things to say about filmmaking and its impact on culture. They also had a lot of reductionist bullshit to say about filmmaking and its impact on culture and far too often they discounted the impact on culture all together.

But I think people the masses are just as much to blame for pass/fail reviewing and Rotten Tomatoes as Roger Ebert. Perhaps moreso.

Ebert was the best. One of my earliest memories is watching his and Siskel's review of Raider Of The Lost Ark. I watched that show religiously at an age when I should have been watching Romper Room. When I moved to England for a few years I realized they played the show at 2:00am and I would stay up. He would often write about how much he disliked the thumbs up/thumbs down thing but he was stuck with it. He wanted people to read his reviews and not just the thumb icon. He would make mistakes on movies and then often go back and say he was wrong. Godfather 2 being the famous one. I loved him. Siskel too.

This is important and a large part of why I managed to find some common ground with him as I got older. I also started actually reading what he wrote.
