The first season of almost word for word. The second through forth seasons are pretty close, say 85÷. It starts to forge its own path after that.

The TV show is also tighter, which is a good thing or a bad thing depending on the extent you are invested in the world building (which is still very very impressive for a TV show)

I tend to agree with this.

One issue so far and yeah the 7th season just started but:

I think they should have spent a bit more time last season developing Euron. Right now he's a very thin character with no backstory who who just quit his punk band. The Kingsmoot was kind of a big deal and it lasted like 10 minutes on the show. The book Euron had a bit more meat to him.

Also another example of how the show has kind of struggled with the storylines that rested outside of Kings Landing and Winterfell.

The faith you guys have in these books coming out is inspiring.

Enough work has gone into the Winds of Winter that I have no doubts about its eventual release. A Dream of Spring? Well..., hopefully he's built up enough momentum to just keep going and plough through it. The end of the story is probably easier to tell, and I'd imagine that he'll have a couple hundred pages that were written for Winds that will find their way into spring. My only concern is that the show finishing his story will sap him of the motivation he'll need to finish. He's also not the healthiest looking 68 year old, so that could be a problem.

Yep, yep, and yep. The one other wrench I'll throw in there is that he's said in the last few years that it's possible he expands the series even further. He's said it could be as many as 10 books, potentially. And we know he's already expanded it twice now. So...

I'm just saying that this doesn't sound like a guy who has any real motivation to end his story. Especially (as we've both said now) once HBO ends it for him.

he keeps taking on other projects as well.

I would LOVE to see him take the story in a different direction from the show, actually. See an entirely different person end up on the Iron Throne in the books. If such a thing would be narratively possible.

I'm of two minds here. First, I want him to tell his story as he'd always intended and not deviate anything JUST because of the show. However, on the other hand... I really hope since the show runners know the ending, that they are purposefully doing different things in the end game. I guess, I want to have my cake and eat it too. I want the books to be totally different but I also the ending to be organic and not deviate from the original plan.

I'll believe it when I see it. But, yeah, this would be fucking outstanding!

I don't really see any way he finishes the series in 7 books. Maybe 8.

That's honestly my feeling as well. I fully expect that book 6 will come out before he dies or gives up. But beyond that? I think we'll be lucky to get a 7th book. It'll be a goddamn miracle if we not only get that 7th book, but that it will actually be the end of the series. We'll see. I've been wrong before.

I felt like it did in season two, especially with Arya and Tywin. But they pulled it back together.
