Do you guys have a go to travel bag/pack? In Scotland next month we'll have a car or train, but will be doing a lot of transferring between places, along with two overnight ferry rides to Shetland. A carry on suitcase seems awkward for all of that, but I don't want to take some big hiking backpack either.

It's the waist strap. Ruins the look/stealth of any pack. I went all over Ireland for three weeks with just the Osprey Farpoint 40L.


It's honestly a bit overkill, though. I only used the waist strap the couple times when I found myself dumped at a train station three kilometers outside of town or something.

I've really really liked the REI 28L Ruckpack that I've used for my last few long weekend trips. Way less conspicuous. It comes with some flimsy waist strap but I immediately took it off and never used it. Comfortable to carry, even on long walks and honestly just kind of looks like a regular backpack on me. Doesn't scream TRAVELER TRAVELER TOURIST HERE.


That said, 28L is maybe not enough for a longer international trip. BUT! You're a significantly bigger guy than I am so a bigger backpack would probably look just as inconspicuous on you. One I've had my eye on is the Cotopaxi Alppa 35L (again, it has a waist strap but I think you can just tuck it away. There are other sizes, too. If I was taking a long international trip with stops between cities, this is probably what I would buy right now.

I used to bag groceries in high school. Once this person said, “I want it all in two bags, but don’t make them too heavy.” You have family in northern Minnesota?

Finished up our 4 glorious days in Santorini and was very sad to leave. BUT now here in Athens, just checked into our accommodation (we have an apartment with a view of the Acropolis - nice) and now sitting about 100m away at a little brew pub drinking beers on tap.

Have absolutely loved the whole trip, everything has been so great and exceeded expectations. Don't miss home pretty much at all and don't really want to go home on Friday.

Update, I found a good travel pack/bag. We leave for Scotland in just over two weeks, and I'm still nervous about the driving. And it is a rental so it will probably be manual transmission.

There is a baboon in me . . . clambering-clawed . . . dog-faced . . . yawping a galoot's hunger . . . hairy under the armpits . . . here are the hawk-eyed hankering men . . . here are the blonde and blue-eyed women . . . here they hide curled asleep waiting . . . ready to snarl and kill . . . ready to sing and give milk . . . waiting—I keep the baboon because the wilderness says so.

There is an eagle in me and a mockingbird . . . and the eagle flies among the Rocky Mountains of my dreams and fights among the Sierra crags of what I want . . . and the mockingbird warbles in the early forenoon before the dew is gone, warbles in the underbrush of my Chattanoogas of hope, gushes over the blue Ozark foothills of my wishes—And I got the eagle and the mockingbird from the wilderness.

O, I got a zoo, I got a menagerie, inside my ribs, under my bony head, under my red-valve heart—and I got something else: it is a man-child heart, a woman-child heart: it is a father and mother and lover: it came from God-Knows-Where: it is going to God-Knows-Where—For I am the keeper of the zoo: I say yes and no: I sing and kill and work: I am a pal of the world: I came from the wilderness.

Nice wease! We're enjoying it so far, really relaxed and so much less stressful than Rome or Florence (loved both those as well though).

We can see about half the Acropolis from our balcony edge, not too shabby. But we're in an apartment rather than a hotel, so the view was definitely a bit of a surprise.

Off to do the big tour tomorrow so looking forward to a history lesson.

Ruddo, if I can drive Italy on the wrong side of the road you can drive Scotland. The hardest bit is the first few hours getting the feel of the car from the wrong side and just keep reminding yourself to KEEP LEFT. In Scotland left hand turns are easy (as you don't cross traffic), just keep thinking that if you have a right turn to take it easy. And keep to the left lane wherever possible.
