This is a very good, thought-provoking ILM thread.

shifts in popular opinion you have noticed
noticed this with The Clash over time. to people my brother's age (the forgotten Foghat tail-end of Boomerdom) they were the only band that mattered and now to a lot of younger folks they are forgotten/dismissed in favor of sayyyyyyy...Wire? someone like that.

and today on the FB record freaks and geeks page i am on every day people were going OFF on Tom Waits. in a way that i don't think i would have heard in years past. he's a hokey maudlin goofball to some people now. of course i had to post a link to that made-up waits lyrics thread on here because it just might be my favorite ilm thread ever.

anyway, i think these shifts are healthy. i like the back and forth of generations/time.

obviously, it goes both ways. i never in a million years would have thought i would be selling hoyt axton and paul williams albums to 20 and 30-somethings in the 21st century.
Fascinating how the marching of time and disintegration of contemporary context brings some artists to the fore while other once-unavoidable artists seem much less important or influential than you might've expected.

Like sands through the hourglass, spenno.

We should have a thread where you name one band from each of the above categories.

Someone on that thread mentioned REM and I completely agree. I've seen them go from this massively respected act to being snarkily referred to as "the indie Eagles", especially among younger music writers (mid-20s to early-30s).

I admit I know very little of PJ Harvey's catalog (I've only really listened to Stories, which I love,I really should change that), but I really love these new 2 songs, I'm really excited for the new album (and should probably listen to the rest now as well).

You should listen to "Let England Shake" if you like those 2 new songs.

Oh man! I'm so glad you're getting into this record. I'm a pretty novice PJ Harvey fan. I love so much of her work but there's still a lot I haven't tried out yet. But Let England Shake is phenomenal. What a goddamn powerhouse of a record.

I'm also a GIANT fan of To Bring You My Love. :heartbeat: :heartbeat: :heartbeat:

Yeah, I've heard all of:

Dry
Rid of Me (only once all the way through, though :( )
To Bring You My Love
Is This Desire?
Stories From the City...
and
Let England Shake

And all of them a killer records. She's really fantastic.
