The best takedowns of Tom Waits have always come from Tom Scharpling. He nails it.

I think the only musician I flat out hate (enough to get angry with people) is Mariah Carey. If I see her on the TV, even on mute, I have to leave the room.

I'm pretty easygoing music-wise.

Wouldn't Tom Waits be considered a typical example of acquired taste?

I'd agree, except for the connotations of "acquired taste", which is usually reserved for slight snobbishness. "Oh don't worry, caviar is an acquired taste", etc.

Though I guess Waits has his fair share of snobbish fans.

I don't think an "acquired taste" is ever snobbish, really, except that some people are snobs and some people are anti-snobs. I find anti-snobbery just as annoying as snobbery. I'll fully admit I'm a snob about things I'm very interested in. Even the most working-class man in the world might be a snob about cigarettes or fishing. I also really, really like caviar but will never be able to afford it.

Perfectly cool to be passionate about stuff. Not cool to be a dick about them if others don't "get" them.

I've never had caviar. Does it taste fishy?

Yeah, I agree; being a dick about anything is just... being a dick.

A little bit fishy. It depends. You won't like it if you hate fish, but it's not as intense as something like anchovies. And you usually use very little of it as a garnish / seasoning.

Usually, the very things that other people don't "get" about an artist lead to some of the moments that fans find most entertaining. Even the most ardent Tom Waits fans (hi) enjoy YouTube Cookie Monster parodies of the guy or the occasional moment like this one:

Similarly, Pearl Jam fans have a healthy number of hurdur moments to laugh at, and I have to assume Smashing Pumpkins fans are able to poke fun at Billy Corgan for the following:

1. Everything
2. Everything else
3. Things Billy Corgan is not responsible for

Yeah, the problem comes when somebody can't recognise that things they love can be perceived as flaws.

Really? The first half of her debut album is pretty great.
