At the listening party the two sing out loud moments for me and the little enclave of people around me were "POTATO!" and "left the fucking water running!"

POTATO! POTATO!
It works well where it is, and I actually loved that it comes off that interlude. Great choices.

there's a really interesting irony created by the deep, serene interlude suddenly being interrupted by that relatively superficial fast punker

i do find myself drawn to that transition even if i cant quite articulate why just yet

yeah! it doesn't work on paper but it has a "fuck it, whatever" charm to it, which continues into SS

Probably because it's the most redeeming aspect of the track. It is remarkable to have that level of complexity in it given it's a very short song. The rest is just an overload of Ed ala Can't Deny Me / Ole

this post isn't about Running but the interlude before it

one thing that makes this rock harder than it would otherwise is that Matt plays (almost) every beat on the bass drum, apart from on the snare hits; this is a thrash metal technique more than a punk one; Dave A did it on RVM, and the last time I remember Matt doing it was on Green Disease

To the extent that speculation this song is about death is plausible, it sounds like it fits well thematically with the rest of the record while also changing up the pace in the second half.

"you're now like the water, and the water will find its way... like the sewage in the plumbing cos we left the fucking water running!"

I feel like the interlude between Waiting for Stevie and Running really "belongs" to Running.

I've bumped it from 1 to 2 stars.
It's well placed in the record and the bridge is still golden.

I never hated this, never loved it either. Listening to it on the album hasn't really changed my feelings about the song. It's as good as a fun punk style track by PJ can be. 3.75 stars (I'm uncomfortable giving it an outright 4 stars and I think it's better than Something Special which I give 3.5 stars).

I can’t think of the last time I first heard a PJ song and just did not jive with it, but then heard the song as part of an album and fell in love it. I really dig the song now!

They definitely did the song dirty release as a quasi-single
