And here.
It was on Prime and I remember LV posting a link to an article about the movie's insane twist. I didn't read the article and I was curious. The movie isn't good by any stretch but it's also not the worst movie ever made.

from all accounts it seems like if they had leaned into it a bit more it could have been interesting.

so? tell us your thoughts.
Serenity is pretty flaccid. It's uneven but it's not anywhere near the "worst thing ever made" like the general discussion had led me to believe. I wish it had committed fully to being weird. It holds back too much. I wanted it to be more like Brick in a way -- a self-aware noir of a different color. The scenes where they lean hard into the absurdity of it all, and try to use a unique vernacular are the scenes that work the best.
Under The Silver Lake is a fascinating film. Andrew Garfield is such a force. He's right up there with Driver as being among the best of their generation. The man is fucking riveting to watch. I'm still thinking through the movie and whether or not it totally works for me. But I really liked it, I think. I may end up loving it. But I have to work through what I think the movie is about at its core first. It feels like the movie is biting off a lot and I'm still torn on whether or not it's too much. I also wanted it to be weirder and a little more tense sometimes. Also, Jimmi Simpson should be in everything.
Good. I saw Serenity on a plane...im not sure if they did that movie actually believing the script was good. Its such a weird experience.
Under The Silver Lake is an absolute masterpiece. I think its the best movie out there talking about male toxic behaviour.
That's the big thing that I'm still wrestling with. At times it really feels like it's talking about toxic masculinity in an interesting way and other times it feels a bit icky in the wrong way. But I had the same issue with Mad Men when it first started and it's now my all time favorite TV show. So, it's possible that you're right and it's handling this stuff in an interesting and valuable way and I'm over thinking things.
Which moment do you think its icky?

I don't want to get to heavy into the movie in this thread. I'm sure it's some of the same scenes that lead you to call it "the best movie out there talking about male toxic behavior." Some of those scenes still don't sit well with me because I'm not sure they are doing what they think they're doing or accomplishing anything.

The Lighthouse was incredible. Pattinson was great, but Willem Dafoe as a sea captain was A+++, one of the best performances I've ever seen. And the filmmaking itself was absolutely beautiful.

I feel like this is extremely out of character for me but I’ve always really liked Firefly and Serenity

I really want to see this.
It's super intense, dark, and singular. One of the more focused movies I have ever seen. Locks into a few ideas and buries the characters in them.

Fandango sent me a "10 movies for .99 each" coupon and that's one of the films I grabbed. can't wait to get into it.
