One of the listening party reviews includes a description of the EPK they watched during the BoB Q&A. But it's just been pointed out to me that they just saw a clip of something longer, so we might get new clips I'm not sure.

Yeah I don't have much of a problem with One Direction. It's hard to argue that PJ are cooler than them now.

I wish ed would go back to making his songs cryptic or 'difficult' sometimes. I'm beginning to see that what he called making songs difficult or cryptic or less pop back in the day, was just making songs good to me

That line from Ed in the interview is basically what I felt about the middle period albums. Making songs intentionally difficult. It only worked occasionally and the payoff wasn't what it should have been. I'm glad they're not doing it anymore. What comes out is what comes out.

Honestly it sounds to me trying to make the songs difficult is what made them good or interesting. Be vague and weird ed c'Mon.

Given all the time between records, and all the band members’ side projects, is Pearl Jam itself now a side project for you guys?

I could see, perhaps, where that assumption is made. But we’re more of a group than ever, and the space in between is healthy. It’s a big part of everybody’s life, to be playing music, at all times. And at the same time, it’s important to us to be part of our families, to not be absent fathers.
Also, actually putting out the record is a little bit of a shock to the system. That’s what we remember as being traumatic. Probably, when you take longer between records, there’s more importance placed on the records. Maybe the next thing you do is put out another one in the next year – just put it out, and not have a buildup.

As unpleasant as it often was for Pearl Jam back in the Nineties, shouldn't more good young rock bands be shooting for the pop charts?

Bono talked a lot about, you know, “We can't let rock & roll become a niche.” I thought, “Well, that's kind of crazy. I have more faith in it than that.” But I can definitely see his point. When there’s a pop song that seems a little bit better than others, it's usually one that has some real guitar, real drums in it. I still feel like the best stuff has natural elements.

Ok, if you say so I'm just not a fan of anything from that era. I appreciate what they tried, but I don't like it. The more direct they are in their songs, the more I feel like I can connect, in general. Also, being cryptic for the sake of it is different than just making a song which has many layers and takes multiple listens to sink in. I don't mind the latter. But I like my Pearl Jam when they wear their hearts on their sleeves.

i am a fan of a lot of it. Just not as much of a fan of it.

Yeah that interview if full of proof they write things with a clear purpose/direction in mind like we like to debate about.

Well, it's the same with me if you put it that way. Of course, I still prefer anything Pearl Jam over other music. But I don't feel the need to revisit those albums nearly enough to say I am truly a fan of them. Individual songs, yes.

The problem with this idea that "What comes out is what comes out" is that it kind of assumes that your fans will accept any little creative direction you want to go down. To be fair, many of PJ's fans will and they know that, which is why the quality control hasn't been entirely up to snuff lately.
